Yeah, it's pretty true... We still use our own servers even though we're a really small company. It costs us a lot more than a hosted solution, but we have sensative information that we need to protect and keep out of the hands of others. So we have to put up with the hassels of checking the server room temp, making sure the UPS' work, etc.
