I just got mail from cPanel newsletter about new product called " cPanel VPS Optimized", you can read about it here :
http://www.cpanel.net/products/cpvps/

my question is, will Jag use this for VPS clients ??

According to that email it will be installed with the updates.

It could be very interesting....

"reducing memory usage by up to 60% on VPS instances"

This should be a good thing unless Jag see this as a way of getting more VPS's on a server?

This does look very interesting. Hopefully the cost issue won't hold it back. Not sure how much difference in price it is. Hopefully current ones can be upgraded.

cPanel VPS Optimized
-------------------------------

cPanel VPS Optimized is a new version of cPanel / WHM specifically designed to run on Virtual Private Servers. cPanel VPS Optimized provides the feature rich functionality of cPanel / WHM while reducing memory usage by up to 60% on VPS instances.

cPanel VPS Optimized represents a great step forward for cPanel customers. The reduction in memory usage for each install allows web hosts the ability to host more domains per virtual machine. This increase enables hosts to provide a more efficient and eco-friendly server base with fewer physical machines.

The upgrade to cPanel VPS optimized will require no interaction. Once cPanel VPS Optimized has reached the build tree on your server, automatic updates ( or manual) will upgrade the current cPanel / WHM installation to a cPanel VPS Optimized installation. cPanel VPS Optimized is currently only in EDGE builds.

Information about cPanel VPS optimized can be found at: http://www.cpanel.net/products/cpvps/

I hope so too :) !

It will be automatically implemented according to what was just posted above. cPanel is getting better all the time. One big feature still missing: multiple cPanel login accounts per domain (with pick & choose options for each login). It has been on the request list for ages. The new VPS Optimiztion will make cPanel the best hosting control panel package bar none - no?

I think it already was, but yes the large memory usage is an issue, hopefully not soon though!

If you update your cpanel to EDGE, you can get it. Or you can wait for it to make it to your build release which ever you are using i.e. STABLE, RELEASE etc. and then it gets updated automatically. In short, there is no JaguarPC involvement to "enable" it. It is right there for you to use.

This feature also improves performance on dedicated servers - up to 30% increase. I would wait till it hits the RELEASE tree before implementing it folks. There is a small bug with RVskin in current rendering.

This is breakthrough technology that perhaps is leading to a cPanel based virtual server system tossing the need for SWsoft / Parallels.

Our VPS's will be able to handle more (processes etc) now with less (RAM) and that is a good thing - no?

Totally agree with Frank, don't change to EDGE to get this update, it's not worth it, just be patient.

Nice. I'll play the waiting game. Hopefully it's not too long, very interested/curious in seeing the difference.

do you know how long it takes, usually, for a new version arrive at RELEASE?

There is no set time. All depends on how many bugs/issues are being faced in edge.

Winger as Masood said, no time frame. But as of late cPanel has been on a roll with updates, new features and improvements. I am hoping we will soon see the new lower memory requirements of VPS Optimized in RELEASE at least.

So, let's waiting for the RELEASE one :) !

After testing with it, will Jag begin allowing 128MB users to use the cPanel system?

I did wonder the same thing, I guess it depends on the results. Let's not forget that the improvement is "up to 60%", my guess would be that you would still need more than 128mb for cpanel regardless of this upgrade, but you would obviously have more ram free anyway so thats a big plus!!

I figure... 256MB systems are allowed to run it, and cPanel will be using up to 60% less memory... 128MB is 50% of 256MB. However, it may still be problematic, so, just speculation.

Sounds like it should make it possible, but there might not be enough memory open to be practical.

I have a new VPS that doesn't have any production environments on it as yet so I thought I'd give it a try and upgraded to EDGE tonight. (I have 320MB of RAM and cPanel has not always been happy.)

Before: privvmpages 107,XXX - 121,XXX
After: privvmpages 65,999 - 70,XXX

So things are looking good. cPanel seems to load pages faster and be overall more responsive. I did click around inside of cPanel - phpMyAdmin, Mail, Backups. etc and everything looks good.

I do want to stress that I'm not running much on this VPS right now as it's still in the setup phase. I also would not go the EDGE route on a production server. However, this very limited test looks promising for a more memory friendly cPanel.

After testing with it, will Jag begin allowing 128MB users to use the cPanel system?

I don't think that's a viable idea - cPanel VPS Optimized + Fantastico + Spamassassin and whatever else you decide to run in the background (Firewall etc) will still take around 120Mb, and then cron jobs (especially the cPanel update) will add more usage. At 128Mb you're still likely to encounter service failures if you exceed 128Mb and there isn't enough burst memory available to give you the extra you need.

Once you start adding domains that use memory you'll soon realise that you need more than 128Mb.

Is there people here on Jag that are actually using it on production environments?

It seems to have real benefits for VPS (http://forums.cpanel.net/showthread.php?t=77606&highlight=vps).

I have been using it for a little bit. Is it not in release mode yet? Because I have my cPanel to update automatically but only for release builds, and I noticed the new version...a week ago or so?

I don't see any difference in memory usage. I generally track the load a few times a day and since the upgrade, everything is about the same. I logged into cPanel and clicked around to test it, it does seem a bit speedier but this could be a placebo effect.

Seems like it has now hit "Current" build (Current 23868 (http://changelog.cpanel.net/?revision=0;tree=;treeview=;show=html;pp =25)). Don't seems to be on "Stable" build for now.

Do you have a WHM VPS Optimized loog like this in WHM?

LeeUmm

No, but I do have the logo for cPanel which is why I knew I was using the optimized verison.

I double checked my WHM settings and the update setting is set to release tree, not current.
