One could probably make a living providing gator-aid those unwittingly bitten.![]()

What to see the funniest part? Go look at their home page and tell me what you think 'the gator' is doing, if it isn't spying...

Good point. I'd taken it as either a waterside view of a croc or a variation on "Kilroy was Here", but your implication is definitely more sinister.

Gator stands for it's name... basically annoying, malicious, ruthless and untrustable adware! Force crap in your face whether you like it or not.
fuk gator... I hate them... I had a hard time uninstalling them on my first encounter, even though I removed all the programs related to them it just kept coming back.
Where do you wanna go today?
It is a persistent bugger, isn't it?
As for standing for its name, an apt acronym might be something like this:
GATOR = God Awful Tool of Online Retailers

I use spybot!![]()

Both Adaware and Spybot work well, although it's possible to remove Gator without them. The latest Norton AntiVirus (2004) offers protection against threats like these now too (earlier versions did not), and I expect its competitors will follow, if they haven't already.

Glad your satisfied with Norton. Personally Norton has never
caused me anything but problems and I will never install
anything by Norton again. Then to each his own..
Gator and many other spy-ware programs have been out for
years. Norton is a little slow about addressing the issue.
Every one has different experiences with software. My
experience with Norton was bad.

Connie, I'm no newbie regarding Gator (or the methods for fighting it); that's why I thought the original article that I posted so unbelievable.
As for Norton Antivirus, I haven't been entirely satisfied with it either, especially the last few releases. Definitely a program that is capable of causing one a fair amount of grief under the right circumstances. It also can really sap a computer's performance. This is especially noticable with newer releases on older, slower computers. IMHO, the absolutely paranoid default configuration settings do not help much either.
I can't say I find Norton's competitors suit me better though. I've had some disasterous experiences with some of them over the years. Norton certainly has a venerable history in the utility business, and they do know their stuff. That's not to say there isn't a great deal of room for improvement, an opinion that many of my I.T./I.S. peers share.
I mentioned the Norton solution mainly to show that spyware battling tools have caught the eyes of the big boys, and have gone mainstream. No need for the other tools if you're already in the Norton camp and plan to upgrade.
[Appended a little later]:
Reread this and thought it started out more cranky than intended. Glad that you've found a good solution for yourself, Connie. I'll bet most users out there take no such precautions, not to mention use anything very up-to-date in terms of virus and firewall protection.
