I'm so glad JPC has a knowledgable staff

I'm specing out a job for a client, and I had a couple of technical questions about their site. They referred me to someone at the company they're hosting with. Before I called him, I googled for the host's site and took a look at it. It was greatly uninfomative. I called the place and the guy I was looking for answered the phone. I asked him a couple of the questions I had and got the answers I wanted. Then I asked him if the server supported PHP. His response was "what's that?" I explained it was a very popular web programming language and he said "the server has just about everything on it."

I'm going to go hit my head against a wall now...

As a matter of fact, it's not so unusual...
In many companies, people who answer the phone are only trained to provide informative answers to a limited set of "common" questions. I guess that question is not so common among clients of that hosting

Don't get upset, just put an extra effort in specifying delivery process in great details
    Good luck.

Here's the kicker: I called and introduced myself as a "developer who was quoting a job for one of your clients" and the guy was ready to give me the site's username and password just like that.

Oh, and by the way, I have since found out that PHP is supported.

    kiddie hosts, a dime a dozen .

True hosts, professionals like ourselves, are getting harder to find on the internet.

I could tell you stories that would curl your virtual hair...

Not to change the subject, but as long as I'm thinking about it, when are 'we' gonna get a BSD server going? That's been my only disappoint here, if you want to call it a disappointment. Actually, I suppose it would be an unfulfilled desire. I wouldn't even care if there was an added fee, or whatever...

What would you need FreeBSD for, it's not like you are running e-commerce site or something.

Linux is much more friendly for development and fun.
More software, more 'fans' and less OS restrictions with modular kernel and /proc filesystem.

According to your logic, we shouldn't be using Linux either. I ran my site on IIS for years. Those boneheads used the same arguments as you. BSD is THE choice when it comes to web servers; always has been, always will be. To argue otherwise is foolish...

This is not my logic, but rather your understanding

I wonder how you define 'THE choice'. For you, it isn't popularity, is it? Nor should it be development time (and cost) for custom solutions. Must be reliability then, which is important indeed, but definitely not the highest priority for all.

I suppose it is difference of opinion that makes horseraces, as Mark Twain said, but that's hardly the case with web servers. I've never run BSD on my desktop, for all the reasons you stated earlier, but I've run my web site on BSD in the past, and I would like to repeat that experience; if not here, elsewhere. Having said that, it's NOT a deal breaker for me, but Tech Support is certainly capable of setting up and maintaining a BSD server, i.e.:

If I remember correctly, that was one of the reasons I signed on here. I think FreeBSD is still mentioned on the 'main' JagPC site, but it hasn't come to fruition in the 10 months I've been here. Maybe some day...

    EDIT (Source: http://www.jaguarpc.com/ )
    Our servers are equipped with:
    - Dual Processors (Intel Xeon or AMD MP)
    - Abundent high quality DDR RAM
    - Redhat or FreeBSD
    - Cpanel
    - HostGUI (coming soon!!!)
Anyway, I don't wanna jack this thread, so let's drop it.
