Careful there, Jag...you be in Texas

    From the news section...

There is currently a network problem and engineers are looking into it. We will post an update as soon as it is available. Thank you for your patience during this time.
Texas doesn't take kindly to the "misuse" of the title "engineer"..."misuse" as characterized by them.

    Info link

With fines of $3000/day, they seem to take it pretty seriously.

    Ahh...but what's in a name?

    clssam,

From the article's introduction, this engineering society stated "In June 1998, the Texas Board of Professional Engineers established software engineering as a recognized engineering discipline and established licensing criteria specifically suited to software engineers. The author explains the legal issues involved and how they affect you..."

wgiese was just pointing out that Jaguar's engineers, or any support "engineer" in the tech industry, may need to be more judiscious in their use of the term engineer. Apparently there are legal consequences to its misuse, and since JaguarPC is in Houston, this notice is particularly pertinent.

I had no idea that use the term was so stricly defined but apparently the right special interest group decided that controlling the term's use was beneficial to their certificative (?) body. Professional groups of all sorts always seek means to better regulate and "sell" (my quotes) their professionalism. It often allows one to charge more fees or increase one's paycheck if a regulative body must step in to qualify you. Call it one of the many barriers to entry prevalent in the business world.

Spath, I re read the article. I still don't see how this applies to Jag. I don't recall anywhere that Jag or any person assoiciated with Jag called them selves "Software Engineers". The term is so wide spread I think Texes might have a hard time proving their case in court.

Greg you might be pushing things a little bit when refering to an "Eating Engineer". ...

Since you are a "Forum Engineer" when are you going to get the on the first page of Smilies so I don't have to click on the more button. ..

I think you could take the :smilie_sp off without affecting to many people.

    Just a thought.

The quote was "network problem and engineers" so "software engineer" was not explicitly stated, but the extrapolation of the word engineer in any discipline where engineering training is not required but the term is still used is the point of contention.

But you are right, this particular usage would be difficult to call an offense and a litigator would probably lose in court. The operative word is "probably" which is why I endorse caution. You never know what will happen in court nor do you really know the toal costs required to test your position.

But I wonder... can I be a SoFtwArE eNgInEeR and not a Software Engineer? I have explicitly spelled it in a different manner so, technically, is this a violation? Oh the fun that lawyers have haggling over such stuff and the fees that they get to charge to do it...

Spath as usual I agree with you.

Any one posting and giving a link to a specific thread should be able to back theri position up.

I admit I did not read the entire message either time. It is far two detailed for my simple mind. I think I got the gest of the article. From what I understood I don't think Jag has any problems.

Based on Gregs post He is not concerned.

I would think a good engineer would be close to retirement by the time he/she had 16 years of creditable experience. Talk about overkill. And I thought Fids were being pretentious.

And a CIS degree only requires 12 years of creditable experience. LMAO.
