How about that DMOZ?

I've been pulling my hair out, all week long, trying to figure out why sucking data out of DMOZ is sooooo s-l-o-w! It's been timing out off 'n' on for the last 5-6 days. I tweaked my code every way from Sunday, to no avail. Then, all of a sudden, this morning, it started working again.

I was caching the results for a while, but I discovered it was taking up 495MB of drive space in my account, and growing by the minute, so I killed the cache a couple of weeks ago. To tell you the truth, I couldn't tell any difference. Then, DMOZ turned into a dog.

It was taking 2-3 minutes for fopen to connect to DMOZ, if it connected at all. So, I turned the cache back on, only to have it filled with zero byte files. OMG!!! What a nightmare?!?!?!?

Now, out of the blue, it's working again...

What's a stud to do?

Yeah, and it's going slow again - had to clear a bunch of zero byte files out of the cache again...
