    E-Mail Problem

I haven't been able to send/receive e-mails through Outlook from either of my sites since Sunday.

I submitted a ticket and they told me that my ISP must be blocking port 110 and to contact them.

If 110 is the standard port for e-mail can anyone see any logic as to why Adelphia Cable would block access to it? Is anyone else having this problem?

Usually it's port 25 that ISPs block as a spam fighting measure, which will likely affect your choice of outgoing mail settings. But I've heard of cases where port 110 is blocked as well. Search the forums or webhostingtalk.com for more on this.

It isn't uncommon to block incoming traffic on port 110 to keep people from running their own mail servers, but I've never heard of it being (intensionally) done of outgoing connections.

One thing to try is the same workaround that allows people to send mail through the JPC servers when tehir ISPs block outbound traffic on port 25: connect over SSL. To do this in Outlook go to Tools > Email Accounts and select "View or change existing email accounts." Then Select your JPC account and click the "Change..." button. In the next window click on the "More Settings..." button. On the next window, click the "Advanced" tab and check the "This server requires an SSL-secured connection" box for the Incoming server. You'll probably also need to change the server name from your own domain name to your server's ".nocdirect.com" name.

You may also want to try switching to IMAP. IMAP allows you to access your mail without removing it from the server and allows you to use multiple folders on the server to organize messages as well. It operates on port 143.

The instructions I gave are based on my current Outlook setup. I'm using Outlook 2002, following the setup screens for an IMAP setup. I'd imagine it is pretty similar for POP, but YMMV.

any way to imap the address book?

    Hello,

Is there any way to access the online address book through outlook like you would imap an email account?

    Thanks for your help.

I assume that you are referring to an address book in one of the webmail programs, and unfortunately the answer is no. All of the webmail programs store their address books in propriatary formats separate from the mailbox files, so they can't be accessed from Outlook.

Depending on the package you're using (I'm not very familiar with many of the advanced features of any of the JPC-provided webmail packages) it might be possible to extract contacts in a vCard file that you could then import into Outlook (File > Import and Export... > Import a VCARD File (*.vcf)). vCard is a platform-independant way of transfering contact information between programs or people.
