odd... A sub built around the designs they lay out would have pretty good displacement. I wonder how 'shallow' they mean? Anyone have insight into these kinds of boats?

Any idea if the lockout is meant for surface or subsurface deployment? I'd heard rumors of a flood room for 30m launch, but I have no real idea. I'm not sure if you could convince me that's a good idea, anyway![]()
The only reason I can see for needing surface deployment would be if the equipment was too large for submerged deployment....possible but highly unlikely.
And 30m is rather shallow.
30m *is* shallow for equipment, but not for minimally equiped personnel. I'm thinking rebreathers at the least - huffing a 40lb+ pack up to the surface in the dark would be a challenge. I know there is training for that, and freediving goes quite a bit deeper, but it's still risky for the soldiers.
Positive bouyancy eliminates the need for huffingand there really is minimal effort required to move stuff (relatively speaking). The toughest challenge is usually the cold. At 30 meters you have about 25 mins. at depth with standard scuba gear before there is a need to take decompression breaks on the way to the surface. You can exit, assemble and be on the surface in that amount of time...just a walk in the park.
I realize bouyancy helps out, but I was under the impression most of the load was designed to be neutral or similar to the human body - I really don't know. And I also didn't know you had 25 min before decompression was needed. I thought it was less in colder water because of the lack of diffusion. Again, I have no real idea
But, I'll take your word for it, never having done anything more than snorkeling myself!
