Angry New 'Personal Best' 14,766 Spams in 12 hours

That's right! 985 pages of mails, waiting for me in SquirrelMail, 15 to a page...

I got bored and purged my mail accounts less than 12 hours ago. I thought I'd check and see how many I'd received since then. One account had 14,766 new mails in it.

    Will this madness ever stop?

we could start enabling some of the more respectable lists like spamhaus on the servers.

Before we start globally supporting and implementing imperfect 3rd-party spam perpetrator listings, might we want to know what filters are currently being used locally? Are those that receive excess spam using Spam Assassin? What is the numeric threshold used to include/exclude legitimate mail and has it been adjusted downward to reduce the worst offenders to a more manageable volume? Are domain-centric email filters also being used? All of this is in the control panel so I think it would be wise to exhaust all other methods first before implementing another system-wide process.

If current per-server filters remain inadequate, then I'm for extra levels of protection. As good as spamhaus is, I suspect some people get tagged improperly so we could end up switching one problem for another.

Did a quick search and apparently Vin has enabled a few filters in the past that did yeomen but inadequate work at the time. If everyone has the same problem, maybe spamlists would be useful. I, of course, lack Vin's popularity so am unaffected by his relative volumes of canned meat.

    Up to you, Chief...

I dunno. It's just my lot in life. I've been doing this stuff a long time, and my email addies and domain name are plastered all over the web. So, maybe it's to be expected.

The thing is, by most accounts, the spam situation is supposed to be getting better. You couldn't prove it by me. In my experience, it's getting exponentially worse.

I had to limit my heavily spammed accounts to 100MB, a couple of months ago, 'cause IMAP was timing out on me. Many times I'd have 75k-100k messages in them, and IMAP simply couldn't handle it.

100MB is limiting the number of messages to around 15k-20k. A couple of months ago, that would be good for about 5 days. Now, I'm getting that many mails in 12 hours.

LoL! Really, it's kinda funny. I just purge them, but I would think this is playing hell with your network, especially if it's happening to all your customers.

I have an account over at Lycos, UK, that I use for important stuff. It's stays pretty clear of spam. However, I know they've had their fill of spammers. They recently tried implimenting a program where they were launching DDoS attacks on known spammers.

    That might be fun...

Woo hoo! 10 bucks a message, tripled under RICO...

    Let's see: 14,766 x $30 = $442,980

Maybe you should contact your attorneys, Chief!

    Just checked again...

13,451 new mails in the last 13 hours. So, that's 28,217 spams in the last 24 hours, give or take a few minutes.

I was at work when I started this thread, so I couldn't take a screenshot. But, in case you think I'm BS'ing you, here's a screenshot from a couple of minutes ago.

Okay, I emptied the Inbox and I'm ready to purge.

Note: I received 26 news mails in the time it took to empty the Inbox...

Maybe if you bought some Estrin D, they'd respectfully leave you alone. I'm sure they'd hate to continue to annoy good customers.

I guess they think I'm hung like a hamster. They kept trying to sell me male appendage enhancers...

Not that there isn't a certain appeal to such a product line for all males, but I dunno. If their product was Testrin E, your argument would make sense. If it's Estrin, it sounds more like they'd like for you to get more in touch with your feminine size, er, side. But what do I know of Estrin or Testrin or Progestrin or Indigestrin?

I know a lot of that stuff is made from fish feces and horse urine...

Premarin, for instance, is an acronym for PREgnant MARe urINe.
