Just curious... What do you use?
I'm currently using:
- Preferred (Michigan): 199.5.157.128
- Alternate (Netherlands): 199.166.29.3
They run circles around my ISP's name servers (Arizona)!
Got a better combo? Care to share?

Oh, yeah, I forgot to tell you...
These servers will allow you to go places that 'normal' name servers won't. They allow you to access the 'new' TLDs - ones that most ppl don't know exist, even though some of these have been around 5-6 years!
For instance, try these links:
Did your browser find them? If not, your DNS servers suck!![]()

where would you find a repository of these?
Not sure if 'these' means the 'new' TLDs, or the root-servers?Originally Posted by mattsiegman

Warning! Warning!
This is cutting edge stuff, and fringe computing at it's best! I'm not suggesting that you go register http://matt.rocks/ or whatever. I'm just wondering what other ppl are using for their DNS servers.
Since most ppl are lazy and stupid, I assume they're using the ones provided by their ISP, but you never know!![]()

I'm lazy and stupid
(and I was speaking of name servers)
I am lazy but actually fairly bright. So, how long until we can log onto vin.dsl?

Bwahaha! I'm not even that weird!
You have to draw the line somewhere, Oldfrog, you know?

I actually use my ISPs DNS servers on purpose: I want to know when many of my fellow users can't access my sites because the DNS is flaky once again. (I am with one of the Netherlands' largest ISPs and my sites are visited by a good number of Dutchies.) I only switch temporarily during trouble periods.

I'm not sure I fall into the lazy category, but on this topic I probably am stupid.Originally Posted by Vin DSL

You're talking about changing the network settings on your personal computer, right?
I ASSuMEd the only DNS servers that would work when connected through you ISP were the ones they provide. My ISP's name servers do suck by the way. I'm going to have to play around with this.
As I am sure you figured out from the topic that is not the case. In fact, some applications allow you to override the settings for your network connection. At the present I have different name servers specified for DUN, broadband, and SamSpade.I ASSuMEd the only DNS servers that would work when connected through you ISP were the ones they provide.

I got a wireless router for my laptop, and set it to use these name servers, all I can say is: COOL.
I was using my ISP (Comcast Cable) until a few weeks ago when their DNS went kaplooey and their support reps stated "All the net DNS servers have gone down.. we're working on getting it fixed.. there aren't any others you can use.." as I didn't have a list saved... idiots........
I now have your servers in my router..
BTW,
After reading post after post from Vin, I'm thinking one thing...
We need to get him his own forum area for tips on here.. I think it would be amusing yet insightful...

I just put in those two DNS servers you are using. Even they can't find those two domains you listed.

I would guess that your DNS numbers are getting overridden somewhere.
Try doing an NSLOOKUP and see what it says...![]()

Hrm... No response...
I was just thinking - maybe you've never done a NSLOOKUP...
Assuming you use Windows, do this from CLI:
Code:C:\>nslookup Default Server: ASLAN.OPEN-RSC.ORG Address: 199.5.157.128 > chrono.faq Server: ASLAN.OPEN-RSC.ORG Address: 199.5.157.128 Non-authoritative answer: Name: chrono.faq Address: 199.166.25.112 > free.tibet Server: ASLAN.OPEN-RSC.ORG Address: 199.5.157.128 Non-authoritative answer: Name: free.tibet Address: 199.166.24.204 > server 199.166.29.3 Default Server: nl.public.rootfix.net Address: 199.166.29.3 > chrono.faq Server: nl.public.rootfix.net Address: 199.166.29.3 Non-authoritative answer: Name: chrono.faq Address: 199.166.25.112 > free.tibet Server: nl.public.rootfix.net Address: 199.166.29.3 Non-authoritative answer: Name: free.tibet Address: 199.166.24.204
