    FireFox update

FireFox 1.0.2 was released yesterday. Now for those who don't know there is an icon in the upper right corner of the FF browser right under the minimize and maximize button that you can click for the update. The Icon I have is red with a white arrow that points to the top of the screen.

I've discovered something about updating FireFox. If you don't go to the control panel and remove the current version, you have two FireFox entries. When I upgraded from 1.0 to 1.0.1, I had two different FireFox things in the Add/Remove Programs area. I would think that they'd have it where it only made one entry and removed the old, but who knows.

I updated tonight using the update button on the browser. No problem. In fact I just noticed the update feature I previously mentioned is not showing. That makes me think It only appears when there is an update available.

I think what your referring to is an older version of FireFox. 1.0.1 did install to a different folder.

I still use the previous version occasionally when checking my site for crosss browser compatibility.

This new update will not install to a different folder. It will update 1.0.1 to 1.0.2

Speaking of Firefox, I discovered a real nice extension the other day. Tabbrowser preferences.

When you've got it installed, it loads any link which is set to open in a new window, into a tab instead. It also lets you customise your tab preferences like, load all searches from the search bar in a new tab, load certain tabs in the background (like those clicked on with the middle button), put the tabs on the bottom of the browser window and a lot more.

Here's the link to the extension:

On the author's page there is actually a newer version:

I used the 'update feature' the other night. This is like the second or third time it's gone without a hitch. In the 'old days', you had to uninstall/re-install everything. So, things are definitely going smoother...

Talking about new 'extensions', here's another 'must-have' item, IMHO:
Prevents sites spawning blank windows when clicking binary downloads.

Same thing happens to me, even when using the update button. I now have 1.0, 1.01, and 1.02 on my list. Grr.

    Woo Hoo!

OMG! I erased those old versions, and it deleted Firefox...

Luckily, when I downloaded Firefox 1.0.2 and reinstalled it, all the extensions, themes, and so forth came back!

    Heh! That was fun!

The only 'bad' part is, I had to use Internet Explorer to download it...

Hrm... kinda interesting to see what my wife is 'Googling'...

After erading this thread, and bfore updating Firefox, all I had was 1.0.1 in add/Remove Programs.

    Now I have 1.0.1 and 1.0.2

I only have 1.0.2 showing in add/remove. Of course I removed the keys for Mozilla Firefox (1.0) and (1.0.1) from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\Wi ndows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\. Every new installation/update will write a new key for that version. Since they all end up pointing to uninstallfirefox.exe in \Windows\ Vin's experience is not surprising. You would not want to do this if you had installed the new version in a different folder than the previous, of course.

I didn't think about getting in the Registry and taking it out. Sure would have been easier than reinstalling Firefox

Addendum: Like I said, I lucked-out! Everything was still there, except...

I had to re-install the Flash Player plugin (yes, plugin, not extension). I don't know about the ShockWave, Java, and RealPlayer plugins, et cetera. Haven't had to use them since I accidently erased Firefox...

I also had to re-install the PRGoogleBar extension - speaking of which - this is another 'must-have' extension IMHO. If you run Googlebar (I cannot live without it) you gotta get PRGoogleBar!!!

I never took a liking to having a ton of bars on my screen. I can do everything I need to with google by using the little search box up there in the right. I love that box.
