Need help with 404 error page

In the OnLine Manual it reads:
Setting up Your Own "404:File Not Found" Error Page
A file already exists in the www directory of your server. It's called missing.html. You can edit it to your liking, or create your own. As long as it's called missing.html and it's in your root www directory, the server will display it whenever someone tries to access a page on your domain that does not exist.

I have created a page "to my liking" and named it missing.html and uploaded it to my root directory. I still cannot get it to appear when I purposely try to access a page I don't even have. What in the world am I doing wrong?

I think your first mistake was reading the online manual! lol just kidding...

I think if you name it 404.html (or if that doesn't work 404.shtml) it will work just fine. I use 404.shtml, that's why I'm not sure if the 404.html file will work.

Your "root" directory is your docroot directory, by the way. That means the "public_html" directory (or "www", which is the same thing). If you were trying the missing.html file in your home directory, try putting it in there.

    Good luck!

    Ron,
    It was 404.shtml

I was doing everything else correctly.
    Thanks again, very much.

Ahh yes...the online directory. The thing even Jag says not to look at anymore...

Patti, glad you got the issue resolved. There are things you can do to redefine the page that's used, but if you're happy with 404.shtml then I wouldn't worry about it. If you are iterested in changing it, though, I'd be happy to explain the process (or you can search there forums for the term "ErrorDocument" and find lots of valuable infoon your own).
