    Lightbulb ParaChat Module for PHP-Nuke

I've 'toyed' with the idea of adding a chat room to my web site at JagPC for a couple of years, but could never find one that didn't eat up server resources. I got bored yesterday, and decided to give it another shot. I started thinking about a 'free' service I used about 10 years ago, and wondered if they were still around. In the process, I discovered ParaChat.

    http://www.parachat.com/

I made a ParaChat module for PHP-Nuke, this morning; so far, so good. I don't like the colors, but you don't have a lot of latitude when you're running the 'free', e.g. Basic version. However, it's good enough to play around with...

Anyway, you might want to check it out (Java req'd)...

    http://www.lenon.com/modules.php?name=ChatterBox_DSL

The app basically runs on your PC, not 'my' server, via IRC at ParaChat, so there is zero load on JagPC.

If someone has a better alternative, let me know...

    I checked out the chat.

I might ahve considered it, even though it uses Java which some of my visitors don't have (WebTV, old PCs), but for the fact that it allows people access to other rooms unconnected with your site, and some of them were pretty rude, of course. I wouldn't allow that on my family friendly site.

Not a bad looking chatroom, though a larger format would be cool, too.

    Two things:
    • I can turn off 'roaming'.
    • I can make it bigger - big as I want, actually.

I was worried about the 'smut'. I'll probably turn off the 'community' rooms when I'm done testing...

    Hmmmm... a possibility then!
    Thanks!

Are you planning on keeping it up for a while? I can send my chatters there to test in your chat? lol

Yeah, it's staying, unless it causes problems for me...

Okay, I played around some more, and 720x480 looks like a pretty good compromise - plus, I got rid of the right column...

    Is that about right?

    Day 2

Hey, Ron, I played around with the script this morning, and decided to turn 'roaming' off. Guess what?!?! No pop-ups, and no 'huns'...

Maybe this is just a fluke, but that takes care of most of 'our' objections, right?

You know, this begs the question...

JagPC strikes me as a very progessive enterprise. They're always looking for 'new' things. Since they are a hosting company, I wonder why they don't offer 'hosted chat rooms' either on their own, or through affiliation/partnership with someone like ParaChat; like they do with their domain registrations.

For the right price, I'm sure he'll ratify "your" claim. Of course, a really savvy webhost would have said "Oh, we've been thinking of something along those lines for a few months now but weren't sure there was enough interest. We may now reconsider." That's what one could've said, I tells ya'. [Where's that evil grin emoticon? I could've sworn it was around here somewhere...]

I think JAG is savvy, but I think he's more honest, and doesn't want to "sell his soul" for absolutely 0 return.

    Now, for $4.95 a month.... I don't know. Maybe that's a different story.

    j/k

Oh, I dunno. If Homer can sell his soul for a donut w/ sprinkles, Jag can justifiably sell his for the exhorbitantly higher price of $4.95/mo. He just has to make sure that he already promised it to his "Marge" and he'll have snookered everyone... Beelzeflanders be damned.

    LoL! No problem, Chief!

Looking around, there are a lot of web hosts out there, but they don't offer much in the way of chat room hosting. Alternately, there are a lot of chat room hosts out there, but they don't offer much in the way of web hosting.

    Seems odd...
