    Hi...

I am looking for a simple member controlled web page program. Let me explain. I want to set up a system where by the member can setup a one or two page site, an About Me page and gallery. To give you a better idea, its for a Military Oriented Website (mine) serving many Veterans. I have been asked by many of them if I could allow them to setup a area where they can install a home page just for their specific Military unit or history. Any body have any ideas?

    Regards
    Don

    Don,

There are many ways to do what you want. Take a look under Fantastico on your control panel for some ideas.

The simple way to do it is with ftp.

    1. Create a readme file with directions for your members on using the space.
    2. Create a generic index. html to use as a placeholder (it will help keep your site secure)

When you get a request for such space:

    3. Create an ftp account for the requestor in cPanel. (Create a name, password, and enter folder name (ie GaryG, 8f25D9s, Infantry101)
    4. Transfer a copy of the readme and index.html to the folder.
    5. E-mail the info. to the requestor along with the ftp link (ie ftp://ftp.domainname) and a link to Vins tutorial (see below) and tell the user to save the links to his/her computer.
    3. That's it!

When the user clicks on the link, their browser should go to the folder.

The user clicks on File and Login As. *REMEMBER* the login includes the @domain.xxx info.

The user will not have access to your site, only their folder where they will be able to create a site. They can create the site on their desktop and upload it. *You may want to go to the ftp accounts and set a quota for each account so they don't upload 200mbs of pictures lol.

Just remember, the account is yours. If one of your guests violates the terms of service, it will be your site that is shut down.

Vin created a nice tutorial on using IE for ftp here.

    Uploads? Just drag and drop!

P.S. Walk through is a couple of times and it will become very simple.

Edit: You will have to add a link to each member page on your site. A simple pull-down menu would be great. You could just add a new line to the code when you add a link.

That would be a bare solution: you'd be providing them with bare webspace only. You'll probably want to provide them a more pre-made solution: a page they can add info to and update with relatively limited knowledge of web site building, a gallery ready to accept pictures, that sort of thing.

I'd suggest you go out looking for a CMS to your liking. Needn't be a very complex one for this task. http://www.opensourcecms.com is a nice site to browse and test many of them.
