DISCLAIMER Any resemblance between the views expressed above and those of the owners and operators of this system is purely coincidental. Any resemblance between these views and my own are non-deterministic. The existence of Vin DSL is questionable. The existence of views in the absence of anyone to hold them is problematic. The existence of the reader is left as an exercise in the second-order coefficient.
I think it has something to do with this...

Fascinating. Where'd you come up with that image?
BTW on your BandWidth DSL, I come up with 2.28 Mb/sec, translated to 292.09 KB/sec.
How are you doing that math?
This is my understanding of it... subject to massive readjustment:
First off, I don't know which you're measuring and which you're converting . Your pages implies you are measuring bits and converting to bytes, but I suspect you are doing it the other way 'round. But it really doesn't matter, I will use your implied direction:
Apparently you are using 1024 as the multiplier for k to M, and 8 bits per byte, as
2.28 Mb/sec * 1024 = 2334 Kb/sec
2334 Kb/sec / 8(bits/byte) = 291.84
There is some question in my mind about the k prefix in communications speed. I have reason to believe that it is 1000 and not 1024. Also there is IP overhead that has to be tacked onto any data that you're using as your download. The maximum number of bytes in a packet is 1518, only 1460 of which are data. This is further magnified when there are packets transmitted that are less than full.
I find a better approximation to be go ahead and use 1024, then divide by 9 bits/byte due to these reasons.
2334 Kb/sec / 9(bits/byte) = 259 KB/sec
Of course, if you're measuring 259 KB/sec, then the bit rate should be higher.
Or you could just label it as "effective download speed".
Just something I notced.... I do like the meter's pink to red scale, but I'd like to see the "You" stand out a little more, as I think the grey gets a little lost in the black/white motif of the site.
Can't remember, for sure, but I think it was from a UK news site. Kinda puts it all in perspective though, yes? A lot of civilians don't even know (exactly) where Iran is located, let alone the locations of their nuclear installations...Originally Posted by Ron

Bandwidth calculations are the source of MUCH confusion, even amongst experts, so called. Believe me, I've poured over those figures, ad nauseam (I didn't believe them myself, at first) and they are being calculated accurately.Originally Posted by Ron

I toss the sync bit. Overheard is impossible to calculate exactly. It's voodoo. Most ppl believe it to be somewhere between 6-13%, but that's as far as the agreement goes. On a typical DMT DSL connection, for instance, you could theoretically be connected through up to 256 channels at once. How does one calculate for this? I don't even try...Originally Posted by Ron
I've played around with many, many color combinations, and don't like any of them. Maybe, one of these days, I'll find something I like. I've cruised around the web and looked at other installations of 'Bandwidth Meter DSL". Most ppl use the standard 'black' colors (which I cannot believe) but the ones that have changed the colors, I don't care for either, so...Originally Posted by Ron

If you spend 15 minutes over there, playing around with numbers, it will clear up a LOT of bandwidth questions. I use this site everyday - no kidding! Bandwidth calculations give everyone fits, so there's no shame in using this crutch. It's impossible to do it 'in your head'...

Like I said, I know exactly the calculation you're using, I demonstrated it up front.
Communications speeds quoted by ISPs are frequently done as k = 1000 so a connection of 1500Kbits is 1500 * 1,000 (1,500,000 bps ) instead of 1500 * 1024
I wasn't suggesting that there is a mystical 10 bit byte out there
Don't even get me started on the sync bit or the start/stop bit
I just think that for "effective" throughput you're numbers look a little off. For actual number of bits transferred inclusing TCP bits that nobody cares about, you're probably pretty close.
Well, let's test the theory...![]()
I just ran a test using Bandwidth Meter DSL. It reported:
- 3242.6 Kbps
- 3.17 Mbps
- 405.33 KB/sec.
Then I ran the numbers through the Edoceo Bandwidth Calculator. It reported:
Looks pretty damn close to me, Ron!
- Bits:..........3,320,422
- Kilobits:......3,242.6000
- Megabits:......3.1666
- Gigabits:......0.0031
- Bytes:.........415,053
- Kilobytes:.....405.3250
- Megabytes:.....0.3958
- Gigabytes:.....0.0004
As far as the accuracy of the measurement itself, what can I tell you? It is what it is! That's the bandwidth between your computer and my web site - like it or lump it...![]()

LoL...don't quote me on this, but... I think it says something to the effect of:

When you use derogatory terms like that, I can understand why people attempt to hack into your site.Originally Posted by Vin DSL
I have no doubt the people who tried to hack your site had malicious and perhaps criminal intent. But does that make sense to refer to anyone who wears appropriate headgear for their culture in such a manner?
There very well may be people of arab decent (who wear culturally appropriate headgear) who host their site here. Have a little decency and cultural understanding. Is that too much to ask?
