    Server naming

Would you like to have the servers named by clients instead of "host #" ?

If yes, please post your suggestion for the theme such as name them after animals, geography, science, astronomy, greek mythology, anything at all you want to suggest.

I was hoping users would post suggestions since none numerical servers would help reduce some problems with script kiddies that hit one of our servers. If they find a host22 then certainly they will try host21 and host23 and so on.

The most positive feedback so far in the aletia forum was to name the servers after the periodic table of elements (oxygen, carbon, etc)

I think thats the best suggestion to date and we would like to implement that after the moves are sorted out.

I agree with renaming them. How about after constilations ? (spelling)

there are enough of those to take care of all your servers, and it would seem to me that it's better then numbered.

OH! I didn't know there was any real
advantage to changing to names instead of numbering them. In that case I change my vote!
I really don't care what their names are, as long as they work.

Well, here's some ideas right out of the Rochester Institute of Technology (where I work) Computer Science lab's. Each lab has a different theme for the computers in it...

Elements (lithium, boron, helium, carbon, etc...)
States (utah, kansas, arkansas, vermont, etc.)
Old Music Groups (supremes, kinks, beatles, etc.)

They have one other lab and another naming theme for the servers, but I can't remember what it is. Also, the Info Tech department uses car names for their servers (porsche, lamborghini, etc.).

    Just some ideas...

We named all of ours after cars like (ferrari, viper , camaro etc ) If the server was a good server it would have a faster car name etc based on the speed we would name it.

One note, whatever scheme is used to name the machines, please keep ensure the names are relatively easy to spell.

One thing we did at one of my old jobs was name all of the server after classic arcade games. The first dedicated Web server was named Pong. It was great, you could ping Pong. We had athoer servers such as Zaxxon, Sinistar etc.

I think that host31 and what not sounds much more professional than naming the servers after cars and elements so leaving it like it is get's my vote.
    Thank You,

    Colors?

I like the elements naming idea, but how about naming the servers after colors? Or ice cream flavors? Yum!

Personally I prefer numbered servers. However after Jag posted the reason for possibly changing from numbers to names, I am for anything that increases security. I like the idea of ice cream flavors. That would give an almost unlimited number, since there are so many different flavors on the market. and new flavors are being added constantly.

I name my home computers after mythological creatures and other nifty sounding names.

Isis, Hydra, Chimera, Phoenix, Cerberus, etc.

I would like a server that was stable, name them whatever.
Why not name them after the first names of people working at
    Jaguar?
