I would love to have something other than DSL, but I run servers out of the house, and everyone around here blocks the 'usual' ports except for Qwest DSL. Qwest even blocks ports on VDSL, which is fiber to your neighborhood...
I assume the ports were blocked on your cable service, but how about on FTTH or whatever you're getting?

Who's your carrier? A local, regional, or national? I'm turning green already.Originally Posted by Ron

Do you live in one of the 'red' areas?Originally Posted by Spathiphyllum

I'm in Massachusetts -- oddly the only completely red state.
(You won't hear that too many times)
Yup, Verizon.
My cable company doesn't block any ports that I'm aware of, but I haven't tried to run a server.
The $5 off prices are when you sign a year-long "price guarantee" contract. 30 day money back and free install offer.
I'd get the $179 package if I were going to go into the dedicated server hosting business and compete with Jag. Ummmm not. Although the Fiber does have an 8 hour backup UPS.
They pre-installed the system last Tuesday, so I'd imagine today is running some cat-5 for me (if not, I've pre-run from the cellar myself already) and testing the dang thing. I really hope they don't want to install some sort of package on my computer for this -- they did that with DSL for my brother and it wreaked havoc for a while.
NE way, I gotta run, D-Hour is in 20 minutes (to 4 hours and 20 minutes)
<edit> PS according to http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,14307704 when Verizon wants to compete with OptOnLine in New York, they dropped the price of the 30/5 service to $54.95 a month!

Still working on the installation...
...stand by for NEWS....
Well, I'm jealous.Keep us posted on the service provided.
However, those ARE the only places that Verizon will offer light swords. FiOS will not be offered beyond Verizon's wireline network... Ergo, if you aren't in the 'red' zones, you cannot get FiOS service -- period.Originally Posted by the_ancient

Your post implied that all persons in the red zones could get the service, it will be 2012+++++ before verizion is rolled out..
Which is more hope than I have anyway as SBC in their "Project Lightspeed" will only be a FTTN but they claim it will be just as fast a fios![]()
they also cliam to be 80% rolled out by 2008, but give their projections for DSL and the actual time for DSL I would expect my "Project Lightspeed" connection here in indy around 2199![]()
