    Google Analytics

Google has untethered its March aquisition, Urchin web analytics, from its cumbersome need to charge for services. Yes, what once cost hundreds of dollars is now completely free!

Urchin, now dubbed Google Analytics, is free to those with less than five million monthly page views...

    http://www.google.com/analytics/

Google Analytics will let website owners see exactly where visitors to their site are coming from, what links on the site are getting the most traffic, what pages visitors are viewing, how long people stay on the site, which products on merchant sites are being sold and where people give up in multistep checkout processes, et cetera.

    Urchin's products previously cost $495 a month...
DISCLAIMER Any resemblance between the views expressed above and those of the owners and operators of this system is purely coincidental. Any resemblance between these views and my own are non-deterministic. The existence of Vin DSL is questionable. The existence of views in the absence of anyone to hold them is problematic. The existence of the reader is left as an exercise in the second-order coefficient.

You do have to have an AdWords account to use the service. Right now it has a few bugs. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/google-analytics/ for more Info, read the comments for a few of the problems.

It is worth trying. Took over a day before it would verify my code. Like AwStats it only updates every so often.

My understanding is, you do NOT need an AdWords account if you have less than five million monthly page views, just a simple Google/Gmail account.

I started to signup the other night, after I posted this thread, and it took my Google/Gmail username/password with no problem. However, I didn't have time to read the 'fine print', so I logged off before completing the process.

I wanted to make sure if and when they start charging for this service that I would get a chance to opt-out before they started debiting my AdSense revenues, or whatever...

Your access to analytics is in AdWords.

    According to Google
    Integrated with AdWords.

If you have an AdWords account, you can use Google Analytics directly from the AdWords interface. Google Analytics is the only product that can automatically provide AdWords ROI metrics, without you having to import cost data or add tracking information to keywords. Of course, Google Analytics tracks all of your non-AdWords initiatives as well.
    From http://www.google.com/analytics/
and seamlessly integrated with AdWords, Google Analytics provides the actionable information you need to improve your site content, optimize your ad campaigns, and boost your ROI.
    From http://www.google.com/analytics/features.html

It is free if you have less than 5 million page view per month.

Google is requiring all AdWords users to also have a Google Account by Jan.

Vin I'm not saying you can't sign up without an AdWords account, but everything I read seems to me to indicate you need one. I think what Matt Cutts said on his blog may have been a matter of poor wording. I'm going to ask him.

It will be interesting and informative to see what your experience is when signing up. You may be right so let us know.

Heh! You dah man, Connie! Issue a challenge to VinDSL, and sit back and chuckle...

Okay, the hell with the 'fine print'! I just set an account, and I DO NOT have an AdWords account.

It's 10:00 PM local, give or take, so let's see how long it takes to validate...

I signed up the other night. I have no AdWords account and so far it seems to be working fine. You only need an AdWords account if you get more than 5 million hits/month.

There has been a lot of discussion about this service on UWebD, a mailing list of college/university web professionals. So far it looks like a pretty cool tool.

I set up 5 sites from the first day they released it and have tracked sites that get from 4-5 hits per day to one that gets just around 50,000 per day. I have several days of data and it seems to work great. I do not have ad words on any of these sites and have seen no slowdown from accessing the external javascript file. This is a greal tool and I'm glad that Google is making it widely available.

Yep! Snooze n' lose, in this case!

Google had NO idea how popular this was going to be, and their system cannot handle all the traffic...

I thought it got alittle sluggish a few days ago...

I know google is basking in the glow of their own glory, but WTF is up with them offering all these more or less unsupported services?

You have Google Earth with is on and of

Gmail which is by invite only

now Analytics that only a few people can sign up...

If it is POPULAR that means there is a DEMAND, and if there is a DEMAND, people will BUY the services??

Urcin was just completly over priced, if google came out with a reasonable pricing structure they could probally make some good money on it.
