It used to take several seconds for the page to load and sometimes it would just stop responding. Now, I click on a link and the page is there.
I did replace my cable modem but I'm not sure how that would have affected this forum alone. Oh well, it's working great...guess that should be enough.
You're not alone, Jaded. I have complained (ok once, I think) about the speed of the forum here. When Jag changed the background, it seemed to improve things quite a bit, to the point where they are OK.
I used to (and still do, since page loads are only OK now) open a new window for each category where there are new posts, then I click around to each one opening up the first new post, then going back to the first to read... then clicking on Next Thread, and changing windows to see the next category, etc.
I still have times when the page loads are slow, but nothing like they used to be.
My site, running phpBB is lightening fast, so I don't think it's the routing to Houston, and this problem survived my migration to Fiber Optic (15Mbit) service away from my Cable service.
EDIT: PS; I think it was Spathy who suggested that my problem might lie in the fact that I have selected to show 40 posts per page. I never tried making it a different number; Just curious - are you also set to 40 ppp?

Ron I wouldnt think the 40 ppp would really effect it that much, thats just calling and printing more text and the same ole images. Ive never really seen the forums act real slow from here at the office or at home.
Your running an old tandy pc there are ya? I only ask becuase you mentioned a difference with just a background image change, the filesize didnt change with that, just the look.
This server load, well there isnt one on this jag server. Our sql server is pretty much unloaded as well. Besides maybe the graphics I dont know why the forums would appear to load slow for anyone.
If you see the forums as loading slow please post your machine specs, browser, time of day or which days you notice faster or slower loading, and anything else that may help me figure out the puzzle.

I know that this forum is slow to display/render and scroll under Firefox (Linux). I dont know why, but using IE or Opera (WinXP) its 10 times faster.
What time of day are the load spikes on the server? We can test it then.
P4 3.0 Ghz
1 Gig 533 DDR2
ATI x600

using firefox here, seems to be the same to me as netscape and Ie (when it worked) ... i broke my IE

P4 2.6 GHz 512MB with some sort of an AGI video board that supposedly can do TV and stuff that I've never actually tried in the year+ I've owned this since I don't have cable TV service...
I dunno what the problem is, Greg... it's been since day one with these forums. I'm probably not the only one who was experiencing the effect, and it probably doesn't show off the hosting capabilities of Jag very well to those that see the problem.
When I mentioned it before, I think I was told the same thing , that your servers were fine... I think I had assumed it was a slow server issue, since other Vb installations look ok to me, and I have no issues with connectivity to my sites (then on two different subnets).
and what's wrong with the old Tandy Machines?

(I sold TRS-80's back in the late 70's....)
I remember the 5-Megabyte "Winchester" drive... for a mere $5,000.
My brother just sent me an ad for a 1 Terabyte external drive for just over $700.
OT -- Maybe you should exchange monikers with "The Ancient" lol.Originally Posted by Ron
I think you're talking about the new Quckreply using AJAX technology, introduced on vB3.5... it doesn't reload the whole page like before... it just sends your post to the server, and the server sends back the formatted post and using javascript technology it's placed on the thread page.Originally Posted by Jaded

Funny guy! I DO feel the ridges of the triceratops forming in/at the back of my head...Originally Posted by Jaded
Actually, I think the 5Meg Winchester was in 1981...
Still, that 1TB drive is 200,000 times larger and 1/7th the price.
Not to mention the access speed and data transfer rates.
