DISCLAIMER Any resemblance between the views expressed above and those of the owners and operators of this system is purely coincidental. Any resemblance between these views and my own are non-deterministic. The existence of Vin DSL is questionable. The existence of views in the absence of anyone to hold them is problematic. The existence of the reader is left as an exercise in the second-order coefficient.

Man, I don't know what Martin did to WinSCP, but it's smokin'! Much faster than before...

Also, you can set the timeout up to 6000 seconds now, instead of 300. That's a major plus! 3600 seems about right!

Faster how? Local performance is better? Operations quicker? Connection lag decreased?

    For instance, load time...

You need to realize, I've used this proggie for a LONG time. I've become accustomed to WinSCP taking a while to load. It always has. Then, it takes a while to login, then a while for the directories to appear, et cetera. Heh! Ask Connie how slow WinSCP can be... Now, I click the icon, a different type of dialog box pops up (than I'm used to), and bada bing, you're in.

Time is a funny thing! Maybe it took 5 seconds to login before, and now it takes 3. I dunno! Never timed it. But, it *feels* twice as fast.

The timeout thing always bugged me. Most of the time it doesn't matter, but when I'm trying to 'zip' my entire site from a console, 300 seconds isn't long enough. So, I have to do it the 'hard' way, from CLI using PuTTY. Maybe, it's not all that much of a PITA, but maybe it is. Depends on how much time you have to 'play around'. 300 seconds is a long time to wait, only to have a failure, if you're short on time...

Anyway, to my recollection, WinSCP has never gotten faster over the years. If anything, it's gotten slower -- until this version. The 'whole thing' just seems snappier. It's a pleasant suprise!

Maybe I shouldn't have said anything, but it was obvious after using it or a while. I'm in n' out of WinSCP constantly, all day, all night. I'll be interested to see if anyone else notices the difference.

    Woot! Just noticed something else...

Now you can sort the directories by extensions. That was another one of my pet peeves!

Speed is always good. I was just curious if the network protocol implementation was improved or if the internal routines were redone. Since it's still 3.x, I figure it's more of a feature tweak version than some major internal code revision. But who knows? He can revise however he wants and if the bottom line is improved speed despite program bloat, then kudos. RAM use is so trivial (considering the amounts that may be purchased and installed so cheaply now) so once it's loaded, if it performs better, then great.

Reluctantly I downloaded/installed this beta version.

I had been running a very old version, probably more than a year old. I was getting only 100KBytes/second transfer, and I needed to download 3GB (complete "year-end" (close enough) backup).

I had seen bursts higher than that in the past, but it's been pretty consistent for the last 5 or 6 months or more -- no more than 100KBytes.

The new version downloaded the 3GB at an average of 545KBytes. That's about as fast as my connection and the distance from Dallas or Houston will allow. The whole thing downloaded in under an hour and a half! I hope it's not corrupt!

    Thanks Vin!

Yep, this is turning into a 'dandy' app! It was always 'okay', but now it's becoming 'polished'...

It's been fun, watching it evolve!
