    Thumbs up Happy Eid al-Adha

ANKARA, Turkey - Hundreds of Turks stabbed themselves or were otherwise injured on Tuesday as they sacrificed agitated animals on the first day of the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday.

Muslims sacrifice cows, sheep, goats and bulls during the four-day religious holiday, a ritual commemorating the biblical account of God's provision of a ram for Abraham to sacrifice as he was about to slay his son.

Muslims share the meat with friends, family and neighbours and give some to the poor.

More than 1 000 people, including about 500 in Istanbul, were treated at hospitals, most for cuts to their hands and legs, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Two people died of heart attacks while trying to restrain animals, it said.

An escaped bull ran through the streets of the Mediterranean port city of Mersin followed by a police car, Anatolia said.

It was eventually caught after a vet fired a tranquilliser dart.

Private NTV television showed footage of other escaped bulls running in streets or attacking owners.

Turkish authorities have introduced fines for those who slaughter animals outside facilities set up by local municipalities.

But many Turks could still be seen sacrificing animals in their backyards or on roadside.

Just think of the trouble had they been cutting bagels with a dull knife.

Interesting that the word "sacrifice" is used, then "they give the meat to..."

I am not up on my ritualistic sacrificing rules, but isn't a sacrifice by definition not used as food? Otherwise it's dinner, no?

Since Abraham is also the Patriarch of Judaism I guess this kinda fits in with Vinny's "Jewish Conspiracy" theory, too.

I think I'll celebrate Eid al-Adha by sacrificing a few dogs with a pellet gun. It's safer than stabbing them with Henkels...

    More Holiday fun!

MINA, Saudi Arabia - Thousands of Muslim pilgrims rushing to complete a symbolic stoning ritual during the hajj tripped over luggage Thursday, causing a crush in which up to 400 people were killed despite Saudi attempts to prevent stampedes that have plagued the annual event.

The stampede occurred as tens of thousands of pilgrims headed toward al-Jamarat, a series of three pillars representing the devil that the faithful pelt with stones to purge themselves of sin.

Late Thursday, Saudi officials estimated that 400 people were killed. More than 1,000 people were injured, said Dr. Abbasi with the Saudi Red Crescent.

Hmm... I wonder if one could convince the 'insurgents' to observe such a holiday? Make it a weekly event and inside of a year, the problems would take care of themselves.

Heh! I can't believe we're not supposed to say "Merry Christmas" out of respect for these turds!

They celebrate their religious holiday[s] with a knife in one hand and a rock in the other...

Some people take everything literally while it is meant to be symbolic with deaper philosophy. That is why all religious texts have been misinterpreted to an extreme extent making it illogical.

    More Eid al-Adha celebrating...

A US air strike in Pakistan targeted al-Qaeda's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, but it was unclear if he had been killed, US sources knowledgeable about the strike said in Washington.

CNN quoted sources as saying the CIA had ordered the air strike on buildings after receiving intelligence that Zawahiri was in a village near the border with Afghanistan.

ABC News quoted Pakistani military sources as saying five of those killed were "high-level" al-Qaeda figures...

One resident said several foreigners had come to the village to celebrate this week's Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.

Premature celebrations. Would be a nice anniversary though should his death coincide with Islam's Hajj.

And, finally, the perfect end to a perfect holiday:

Rescue teams were scouring the Red Sea for survivors after an Egyptian ferry sank, leaving more than 1,000 people dead or missing in one of the worst maritime tragedies in years...

The passengers, mainly Egyptians working in Gulf countries, or returning from the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca...

A ship owned by the same Al-Salam company collided with a cargo vessel near the entrance of the Suez canal in October, causing a stampede that left two people dead and up to 100 injured....
    Full Story: http://www.masnet.org/news.asp?id=3167

Surviving passengers of an ageing Egyptian ferry that sank in the Red Sea, leaving hundreds feared dead, blamed the crew Saturday for failing to turn around when a fire broke out and monopolising the life rafts...

"The first person to get into a lifeboat was the captain," said Sayyed.

The captain was however numbered among the missing. Some of those rescued said they had seen him fall from his lifeboat...
