While I think the reaction is over-the-top, I think that all religions do get riled up when their icons are treated poorly.

I recall a lot of outrage over an artist's depiction of a cross in a glass of urine (I think the piece was called piss-christ). I recall a lot of outrage when Madonna ripped up a picture of the Pope.

If a "respectable" western paper published a picture of a Rabbi as a terrorist, they would have the ADL on them pretty quickly, too.

The thing is, it's not because they aren't as "civilized" as we are. I'm not saying the people are savages, or any different then we are. In some ways their civilization isn't as refind, their populace isn't as pacified. Their culture reacts to slights this way just a little more easily than we do. Plus their population is a LOT younger age wise than ours. I'd guess its not mostly the 70 year olds that are protesting, it's the 16-25 year olds.

We have had problems like this in our "more civilized" society, too. Anyone remember the Watts riots? Or the Rodney King riots? Or how about the riots over in France, or in front of any WTO meeting?

This isn't a religious exhibition as much as it is a political one. They can be intertwined, but during this particular rioting (including the fires in France), it's a revolt against western power and the Semites, not religion. The Islamofacists are exploiting earlier events to divert external pressure from the West and to place blame for other internal strife via proxy.

There exists a cultural vagueness in the West. This vagueness results from the presence of two different concepts. The first is a great Western concept that we respect, appraise, and need. That concept is freedom of speech. This is a great humane and civilized concept. On the other hand, there is the great Islamic concept of dignifying Allah’s Messenger (SAWS). The problem arises due to the lack of understanding of the Islamic Civilization and the Western Civilization regarding these two concepts. The non-Muslims cannot value the rank of dignifying the Prophet (SAWS). On the other hand, due to the below-average quality of practical application of freedom of speech, Muslims have a vague understanding of the concept of respecting freedom of speech.



Accordingly, what is required now? We do not want to refuse the concept of freedom of speech, absolutely not. However, the West should alter the freedom of speech so that it does not collide with the very important Islamic value of dignifying the Prophet (SAWS). Here lies the vagueness and ambiguity. The West understands very well the freedom of speech (which we appreciate) but it does not understand Islamic values, such as dignifying the Prophet (SAWS) and other Islamic sanctities. This is where the Western cultural vagueness lies.



I clearly say to the West, you have a problem. You cannot comprehend how much the Muslims love Prophet Muhammad (SAWS). You are still unable to understand this point. If you had really encompassed its significance, you would never have accepted what happened. The West, in general, governments and people, does not apprehend that Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) is dearer to us than our parents, dearer to me than my father and dearer than my mother. I am sure that any Muslim woman listening to me now, be her religious or not, will swear on that fact. Just ask, what does Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) mean to you? It is not even necessary to do that because it is so evident, but you may conduct surveys for yourselves, and you will realize how true what I am saying is. Ask any youth, be he heedless or pious; ask any Muslim anywhere, in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Yemen or in Egypt. Ask any Muslim in any village regardless of how religious he is, be he an obedient Muslim or not, a drug user or not, successful in his life or a failure, old or young, ask them, what does Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) mean to you?



O West, I affirm that Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) is dearer to all Muslims than their own parents. O West, Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) is dearer to us, Muslims, than our children and grandchildren. O West, Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) is dearer to us than our money, dearer to us than our own selves. He is dearer to us than our own countries. O Egyptian, who is dearer to you, Egypt or Allah’s Prophet? O Saudi, who is dearer to you, Saudi Arabia or Allah’s Prophet? O Yemeni, O Moroccan, O Algerian, who is dearer to you, your country or Allah’s Messenger (SAWS)? O West, comprehend that meaning, Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) is dearer to Muslims than their children and their own selves.



We can never forget the hadith that I repeatedly mentioned during the episodes of “On the Path of the Beloved”. O West, listen to this hadith[11] as it forms part of the sentimental make-up of the Islamic personality:



“We were with the Prophet and he was holding the hand of Omar Ibnul-Khattab. Omar said to him, ‘O Allah's Messenger! You are dearer to me than everything except my own self.’ The Prophet said, ‘No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, (you will not have complete faith) till I am dearer to you than your own self.’ Then Omar said to him, ‘However, now, by Allah, you are dearer to me than my own self.’ The Prophet said, ‘Now, O Omar, (now you are a believer).’”[12]



Being a true believer is conditioned with loving Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) more than our own selves.



O West, this is our notion and this is our love for Prophet Muhammad (SAWS).

You and Amr Khaled may spread your word and that of your religion to the four corners of this round globe, but you may not demand that I subjugate my beliefs to yours or the Prophet's, torch my neighborhood, threaten my life, or kill me for disagreeing. When the response escalates to the degree advocated by some religious imams and those who suggest extremes as justifiable, you have lost my passive indifference and invited active belligerence. Your prophet may be all the things your history advances (whether or not I accept it) but its followers do a great disservice to the religion's message and will recruit poorly if fear and retribution are the tools to persuade.

Fortunately, I am not beholden to your (or Khaled's) expectations though I may select to respect them conditionally.

first of all
the last reply was explaining how our prophet is our best mankind example and how it is dearer to all Muslims than their own parents ,childrens ,money ,..... .
and we are as muslims refuse any body revileing our prophet or laughing at him using some stupid pics or printed T-Shirts

i'm not forceing u to believe our prophet but only to respect our relegion , in addition to that i want from every body before sending these posts is to know more about this person (or other ) because i'm sure that ur relegion also ordering and advicing u to respect other

i'm not saying that all muslims ( in this period ) follow our prophet mohamed in his all actions ,and there is a lot of worng things mulsims have to correct it .
As u i think also u have to correct your beleives about islamic relegion because not all peoples are perfect .We as a muslim's country's,there is a crimes ,but in the west the crimes ratio is much bigger then the ratio in our countries

Look, this country -- the USA -- sucks! Democracy is mob rule! And, 'we' don't hold anything sacred, except maybe queers NOT molesting 'our' offspring, and 'rag heads' bringing down our skyscrapers...

The fact of the matter is, all 'you guys' like to live with chickens. That's 'your' weak link. So, it's a simple matter to wipe you off the face of the earth, very innocently, with 'bird influenza' -- much the way 'we' got rid of hordes of negroes with abortion, and homos with AIDS.

First of all, let us clear out this misconception that Jihad is some kind of violent reaction or burning embassies or killing infidels. This is the kind of "jihad" that political clergy in Islam is using to gain political power.

Jihad is in fact the struggle against the evil desires of one's innerself.

Vin DSL has quoted the Hadith (tradition of the Prophet Muhammad) rightly so. Thank you for sharing it. It was his practice throughout his life to forgive. No where in Quran or Hadith there is any punishment for blasphemy. The only direction Muslims were given were to 'walk away with dignity' from such ridicule.

I agree with Frank as well. All religions teach the same patience, forgiveness, peace and love. But it is so unfortunate that some evils hijack the very same peaceful religion.

Now the current issue is not an issue between Islam and West or an issue of freedom of expression. Sorry to disappoint some people including the emotional "Amr Khaled", it has nothing to with these things.

Robert Fisk has summed up the issue nicely in The Independent UK:

"The fact is that Muslims live their religion. We do not. They have kept their faith through innumerable historical vicissitudes. We have lost our faith...That’s why we talk about “the West versus Islam” rather than “Christians versus Islam” - because there aren’t an awful lot of Christians left in Europe.

Besides, we can exercise our own hypocrisy over religious feelings. I happen to remember how, more than a decade ago, a film called The Last Temptation of Christ showed Jesus making love to a woman. In Paris, someone set fire to the cinema showing the movie, killing a young man.

I also enjoyed the pompous claims of European statesmen that they cannot control free speech or newspapers. This is also nonsense. Had that cartoon of the Prophet shown instead a chief rabbi with a bomb-shaped hat, we would have had “anti-Semitism” screamed into our ears - and rightly so...Furthermore, in some European nations - France is one, Germany and Austria are among the others - it is forbidden by law to deny acts of genocide. In France, for example, it is illegal to say that the Jewish Holocaust or the Armenian Holocaust did not happen. So it is, in fact, impermissable to make certain statements in European nations.

For many Muslims, the “Islamic” reaction to this affair is an embarrassment. There is good reason to believe that Muslims would like to see some element of reform introduced to their religion. If this cartoon had advanced the cause of those who want to debate this issue, no-one would have minded. But it was clearly intended to be provocative. It was so outrageous that it only caused reaction. The problem is that these cartoons portrayed Mohamed as a bin Laden-type image of violence. They portrayed Islam as a violent religion. It is not. Or do we want to make it so?
