    Cool Windows Live

I know most of you are mired in your own personal hell, but has anyone been paying attention to Microsoft's answer to Google (Search) -- Windows Live?

I (also) know you could probably give a rat's ass about Microsoft, but it IS interesting, all the same...

Microsoft Corp. is releasing an overhauled Internet search engine, under a new name, still looking for traction in a market where rivals Google and Yahoo! have continued to pull ahead.

The Redmond company today plans to issue a preliminary version of Windows Live Search, with a new look and additional features that Microsoft says should make it easier to find information on the Web. The company's share of the Web search market has slipped since introducing its internally developed MSN Search engine last year.

"I'm hoping this does turn it around, without a doubt," said Christopher Payne, Microsoft corporate vice president for MSN Search, in an interview Tuesday. "We believe that it's still very early in search, and that there's still significant room for differentiation. Prior to this, I don't think we've really gotten enough differentiation in order to win people back."

I'll have to play with it...

I wonder how much MS had to pay Live Networks for the domain name. Although web design wasn't their strong point, "Live" appears to have been pretty well established with that domain: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.live.com

Speaking of search engines, has anyone seen Amazon's A9 search? They seem to mash together results from Google, Alexa, and their own spider for their web search, plus they offer searches of other sites like Wikipedia, New York Times, etc. It also lets you build a bookmark list if you log in with your Amazon ID; if you search with A9 frequently you also make yourself elligible for a small discout on Amazon orders. I like how it dispalays everything on one page in "windows," but I'm not crazy about Amazon knowing every term I search on so I don't really use it.
