    Invision (through cPanel)

So... Invision is a paid-for forum package, but we get it free through the cPanel add-on scripts. How would one go about upgrading or anything else like that when we are not actually paid Invision customers? I gotta say, I'm actually preferring it over phpBB (who have royally irked me with that pathetic broken excuse for an upgrade they call 2.0.20), but I am lacking in the funds department.

is 2.0.20 broken? I haven't installed it yet... I always wait a bit b4 installing their packages now unless it's an emergency security fix. .18 really ticked me off with 70-something changes along with a security patch.

You can only install an old version of Invision, not the latest 2.x branch.

Yeah, thanks. I found that out later through Googling. Shoulda done that first, eh?

Ron, yes, 2.0.20 is a bit broken. I thought maybe I'd screwed up doing the code changes install, but nope, lots of people are reporting all kinds of problems even with the changed files. For me, neither html nor bbcode would work anymore. Not to mention that I wound up having to download the changed files anyway because the code changes tutorial's instructions (followed to the letter!) were causing parse errors in one of the admin files (and this is after they had re-released the code changes tutorial because the first one they put out had missing lines in it). Grrrr...

I'm seriously considering switching. I've been loyal to phpBB for years, but now looking at a program like MyBB which is at version 1.1 and already has more features out of the box than phpBB.... that's giving me the impression that phpBB isn't really so great.

On the update to 18 (or was it 17?) 17, I think, they sent an email with an immediate security patch, which had a syntax error as the email was stripped of a special character or two. When I raised the issue, I didn't receive a single response. lol

I had a long drawn-out argument with them about right-sizing their releases into something less than 2 year bites; they banned me for having the gall to suggest they bite off a little less next time. LOL That was more than a year ago I think, and "2.2" hasn't arrived yet.... It is now > 4 years since 2.0, and I have now self-modified my board enough to make it a hassle to apply the patch files, especially when they contain more the 50 changes.
I have never installed anyone else's mod.

Since one of my favorite mods involves HTML, I was especially reluctant to upgrade this one due to the content of the release notes.

Oh yeah, biting off less at a time would be a great idea. Maybe if they'd add features instead of making eveyrbody wait for Olympus to get any new features, it'd be fine. But even that isn't so great. I've played with the online demo of phpBB3 at phpbbhacks.com and even though it's nice, it's still lacking a lot of standard features (last topic on index, quick reply built in, etc). It's those little things that they don't have (and refuse to add!) that irk me. I guess I can't expect them to be as good as vB or Invision, but when other FREE boards have more features than they do (with LESS community support) that's just pathetic.

    Hey guys,

I'm really sorry to bump this but I've been looking all over for a hosting company that uses an old version of cPanel and I think I've found one.

I just need to make sure that the version offered in JaguarPC's cPanel is really Invision 1.2 before I can subscribe to a package. I'm asking this because I need to upload my backup to a forum of the same version in order to get it up and running again.

    Thanks in advance.
