    Duel Monitors

I recently purchased a 19" flatscreen monitor from Jag. ( Greg I love it) However, I would also like to run the old monitor with a different screen resolution.

I assume that I could buy a splitter and run both monitors that way, but then I also assume they would both be on the same screen resolution.

I have done a little Googleing about this but really did not see any answers that answered my question.

I know some of you run duel monitors so I was hoping for some suggestions.

Spath to answer a question in another thread that Greg locked, Yes I am blogging.

I run three. I use three graphics cards one over PCI extream and two ovr PCI I can set them all at different sizes and everything.
There are graphics cards that do monitors them self, have a look at nvidia I think they have them!

    Connie,

You'll need a separate graphics card for each monitor. As Zacrifice noted, some cards can handle two monitors at once, most most cannot. If you simply use a splitter you will have the same image on both screens.

At work I have a 21" monitor that came with my computer. The system has a pretty good Nvidia card in it, so I can crank up the resolution and get a lot of stuff on that screen. When I get working in something like Director, though,I still need more real estate. I had an old 17" monitor in the corner of my office that was collecting dust, so I did some digging and found an old Matrox PCI card in a box of junk. I plugged in the Matrox card and Windows Plug-and-Pray detected and installed it automatically. Now I have both monitors connected--the 21" is my primary with a high resolution, the 17" is by its side running at a lower resolution--and they work great.

Your system specs and intended use will determine your options (I know you know this but had to say it anyway).

There are several good cards out there for under 100 bucks and some can be found online for under 70.

ATI and Nvidia chips each have different strengths. For video work, I prefer ATI. For games...Nvidia.

The chips are also available on a variety of off-brand cards that offer great performance while also offering reduced cost.

I would recommend no less than 128mb card (AGPX8 if you system supports it). The ATI 9550 or the Nvidia 5500 series cards or higher.

They come in a variety of configurations. So be sure you pick dual monitor support.

If you need more info. please post your specs and intended us or pm me.

    clssam,

I've been using Matrox (Millenium 400/450/550) dual port video cards for years now. They are terrific for business and 2D applications though these specific models are becoming scarce. For games and 3D? Serviceable, but I could care less about those. The newer models may be great at both but I've not used them firsthand to know for certain.

If considering dual or multiport cards, remember to check for AGP 1X, 2X, or 4X compatibility as well as analog or digital output. With LCDs becoming the norm, you'll probably want to consider having a digital port in there somewhere. That will help you in nearterm upgradeability.

I see you got a flatscreen (assuming LCD and not Trinitron SVGA) so you'll definitely need at least one digital output.

I have a new job. It comes with just one screen I gotten so used to the dual set-up back home and on my previous job.. I guess I won't try three screens at home now, it would just make the difference too big
