So once they dumped Paul, they were actually able to accomplish something. LOL

I have no clue if I'll migrate my now fairly-heavily modified boards to their new release. Almost certainly not 3.0.

Thanks for posting that. I haven't been to their site in a long time.

Of course it was 9 months later... seems like it was only a couple of months ago. I'm so happy he's not on the project anymore; I really think he did a great job with 1.0, an acceptably OK job with 2.0, but was clearly in over his head even then. 3.0 he didn't stand a chance, and wouldn't listen to people begging him to try a different approach or to loosen the reins.

Good luck to the new phpBB team.

Is there a somewhat objective recap of that whole affair on the net somewhere? Or some good tutorial(s) on running a volunteer based software project? (I find myself in over my head too.)

None with which I am familiar. I could search for some... but you're probably as good with Google as I am.

I'm not familiar with running a volunteer effort, but have run some really large development projects and tons of small ones.

I think a lot of the skills from one will fit in with the other, how to prioritize tasks, how to allocate resources, how to prevent SPOFing your project, how to size a project, how to estimate delivery times, how to avoid major scope creep, code reviews, coding standards, etc.

The single biggest and most reliable determiner of a project's success or failure is length of the project. Projects in excess of one year fail 75% of the time. (version 2.2 (renamed 3.0) has been in the works since IIRC January of 2002, or about 4 1/2 years.)

    Good luck!
