Question 3D PNG??? Or Are My Eyes Shot?

I was surfing around, looking for AAC+ streams, and I ran across this horrible banner ad...

    New 80s Ad.png

The thing is, the more I looked at it, the more it appears to be 3D

Anyone else see it, or is it just me?

*hint* You have to look at it for about 30 seconds... and if you have a flat panel LCD, move your head from side-to-side...

LOL, you must have one state of the art LCD to be able to produce a 3d image...

How much did that cost you???

Didn't cost much, but yeah, it's got a good panel in it!

1000:1 contrast ratio and 5ms response time...

You think that's it -- the monitor? Man, that banner is spooky!

I'll check it out from work later today. I've got a 22" Diamondtron there...

I dont see anything out of the ordinary with it. Some Bevled edges and shadowing that is designed to make a 2d image appear 3d.... but that is pretty common weith graphics these days soo.......

Stare at the word 'til' for a while...

    You don't see it? Really?

    Not even a hint?

    Okay, that settles it...

There is NO 3D effect on the banner using my ($700) NEC CRT monitor at work, so 'the_ancient' was right!

It must be a LCD flat panel thing, with its' high contrast ratio and narrow viewing angle. I've noticed the same effect on my production site...

it has to do with the way the colours interact. There's a perceptual difficulty with putting red on blue, which makes the background appear slightly blurred. That 'blurring' gives the illusion of depth, though very slightly. But the whole thing depends on the quality of the monitor, viewing environment, and even the individual's colour perception.

If it was intentional, it's pretty good to be so subtle, but I'm gonna go out on a limb claim it was a happy accident.
