It all depends on what you mean by software. If you're talking about web scripts then yes, there are, to my knowledge, no restrictions on web scripts, provided they don't have any widely known security problems that could compromise the server. The servers support most scripting languages, including PHP, Ruby on Rails, Perl, and Python.

If you are talking about command-line untilities then, again, the answer is yes. You can get access to your account via SSH, where you'll have access to all the standard unix programs, like gcc, vi, etc.

If you are taking about running servers (and I suspect you are), then, sorry but no. The semi-dedicated plan is just a large shared plan and installing any kind of continuously running background processes is prohibited. You should look into the VPS plans, with which you will get root access and the ability to install whatever you want.

JPC's servers are firewalled, so some ports are blocked by default. If some program that you are running on the server needs to connect to a remote host on a blocked prot then it ususally isn't a problem to get that port unblocked, but it is against the TOS to install any "listener processes" on a semi-dedicated machine. Again, with VPS, you'd have full control.

    Hope this helps.
