Does kernel take up any ram? If you have 512megs guaranteed, will you actually receive 512 megs or will some of it be taken up for kernel needs?

Some of the guaranteed memory will be used by processes needed to run your individual environment. If you choose a control panel, there will also be memory used to run services belonging to it as well.
I understand that some processes must always run in order to for the server to function. However my previous vps provider took up some of my "guaranteed" memory for some kind of a "network buffer". I couldnt even see that in my processes list. So i just wanted to know if you guys do the same before i purchase one of your packages. Do you allocated some of my "guaranteed" memory for any of so called network or kernel buffers?
