I prefer the look of the icons at www.iconbuffet.com, personally, but like the_ancient said, knowing what you'll be using them for will really help with suggestions. For example, if I were developing a piece of software that I intended to sell, I'd probably have a designer create custom icons that fit the interface perfectly.

Jason, do you have any of the free sets you want to trade?
I find the small 16x16 icons at famfamfam.com to be really useful for design purposes, but yea, it all depends on the size / use that you want them for.
This is one of my favorite free icon sites:

Great resource for free icons for personal and commercial use is websiteicons.net. Be sure to read the terms tho for each set as it will describe what is needed or if payment is required at all for commercial use:

And of course famfamfam.com as somebody already recommended, they have small icons perfect for interfaces/control panels:

99.9% of the time, I make my own...
If I was you, I'd invest in Paint Shop Pro 7 (10th Anniversary Edition is best) and 'go to town'...
*edit*
Yes, I know this is an older version, but it's still my weapon of choice. The newer stuff is bloated with useless stuff, IMHO.

I'd like to know a nice little proggie for that, Vin. My site's favicon is sooooo pathetic.
There are zillions of them out there, but I still use IconEdit32 and IrfanView.
Heh! I guess I'm a creature of habit. When I find a tool that works for, I tend to stick with it -- like WinSyntax, HomeSite, Paint Shop Pro, et cetera...
It's amazing what I can do with these archaic proggies, yes?
I still use ZenCalc -- It came with my CompuAdd 286 12-MHz machine. What was that, about 1986?
SOME day I'll port the spreadsheets over to Excel, only because DOS mode emulation doesn't work very well in windows (really really slow, it scares me) anymore.
I *think* we've had this discussion before, but...
I cut my virtual teeth on Photoshop, with all the latest plugins, at the time, and I never did like it. I spent most of my time trying to figure out shortcuts. Gawd! You had to go through, like, 10 layers to make a *!@# 'balloon'...
All my buds were using Paint Shop, and I tried it a few times, but absolutely HATED it. However, there was a crossover, at some point... like version 4, where I started taking notice, By version 7, I was sold!
Anyway, water under the bridge. I don't see myself ever going back to it.
Sorry!![]()
