    1 & 1 Domain Registrations

Just for the fun of it (not fun though) I registered two domains at 1& 1 today. What a joke - I registered at 3PM EST today and now 5 hours later I still cannot enter my DNS info for one of the accounts. Their control panel just has this comment next to one of my domains: Basic DNS Settings (Unmodifiable)!

Well one out of two working ain't so bad is it....? Good thing they are just some accounts for me and a good friend. At least his is working.

Next time anyone around here gripes about a ticket not being answered pronto check out what they sent me when I requested support:

    Dear Customer,

This is an autoresponder e-mail. Thank you for your recent e-mail. We expect to answer your e-mail within the next 12 to 24 hours.

What do you expect... every domain they sell they LOSE money on. You cant expect to get good support after buying something below cost can you?????

(FYI, the minimum cost on a .com/.net name is $6.25 -- $.25 to ICANN, and $6 to Verisign. Any registrar selling below that price, loses money )

I guess that is why I keep paying 000 domains $13.95 per year. They were cheap when I started using them. They give good service, so I keep on using them.

I just wanted to try the service. I had the domains already in my Shopping Cart at godaddy where I have all my other domains.... Will have to get the 1&1 domains transferred asap...

Godaddy even with all the hiccups I hear about has been very fast with getting my domains online. Usually 5 - 15 minutes or so.

You like (http://www.000domains.com/ ) aye Connie? ZERO HASSLES, ZERO OBSTACLES, ZERO LIMITS

What other registrars do my fellow JaguarPC comrades like to use?

I used to pay 35 a year or so for my oldest domain I have at Network Solutions.

I dont know why people still use NetSol.....

I am a "reseller" with DirectI, I know alot of people hate them, but I have had very little problems with them, I dont really resell anything, but I got grandfathered in to their lowest price levels so I am not going anywhere....

I use www.optixaldomains.com. It appears they're a reseller of godaddy and I know the owner so I get special discounts! =)

But they've always been the cheapest I could find and when I couldn't find lower I just emailed the owner and he knocked the prices down, I think for everyone. Thats what the page tells me anyway. Don't know if thats for just my account or not. But with free lifetime forwarding (something network solutions charged me for) and like $7 a year I've never been able to find anyone better. I like doing it year by year and I got burned at my last place on the renewal charges so I transfered. Optixal told me renewing will never be higher then current selling prices, and it better stay that way when I get around to renewing again!

But I know the guy so I can go beat his head in if he charges me too much. Good leverage! =)

No one can guarantee that, ICANN is always looking for ways to ncrease their take, and Domain registry Contacts are always changing, Verisign may deided it needs $7 and ICANN may want $1 so that would then increase go daddies cost. which would then increase Optixal cost, and then guess what happens?

I never justify by "hey it could be worse". I have learned with battlescars not to tolerate (within reason) and I move on. In both reselling and domain name registration, there are services around that are better at responding and resolviing - I prefer to use them and save myself any frustration and resulting high blood pressure.

I have had great success with Namecheap.com and have had "0" issues with them. They're not $5.95 - but I find $8.88 isn't too bad. When I had to change name servers when joining up here, I found they had an easy to follow video that got me going in no time (although I appreciated the help, jaguarpc sent me a link to their setting up a name server video but it was out of date and so no too helpful - but I found it on namecheap site with a search). Namecheap even gives a Whois guard subscription (protects your personal info with Whois) for one year - and the bulk subs after that aren't bad priced. Even if a reseller or hosting cimpany provided domain names, I prefer to keep them with separate company where I can effortlessly go into my control panel and switch DNS numbers if I change hosting companies.

Just another suggestion for domain name registrar.

    Yep!

This is always an important consideration...

I've been using 1&1 for a while now, and I think I've had that problem too -- its like the function is ghosted -- can't click on it, right? However, I think it's the sequence of button clicking that causes this. It's a confusing interface...

At first I thought it was the CP they use, which BTW, is the only thing I don't like about the place. It's one of those irritating GUIs that's designed to be so simple a Myspace webmaster can use it -- but too kludgey and overly simplistic for everyone that's 'been around'.

I dunno... for $5.95/yr I'll put up with them!

Having recently inquired into ICANN accreditation, I can confirm this.

This is also why no investors will go near godaddy, they have yet to turn a profit . How far in debt are they now? How far can they go before its tits up? solid business plan there, sell your service below your own cost .. lol

    Heh!

So, 1&1 is buying customers for 30-cents, eh?

    Pretty smart...
