Exclamation Attention Wal-Mart Shoppers -- Septic Peanut Butter

This tears it for me! From our pantry (almost empty)...

    badpbutter.jpg

No more shopping at Wal-Mart for us -- all they sell there is sh!t, literally!!

    Source: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...n/4557431.html

ATLANTA — Government scientists struggled Thursday to pinpoint the source of the first U.S. salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter, the kid favorite packed into millions of lunchboxes every day.

Nearly 300 people in 39 states have fallen ill since August, and federal health investigators said they strongly suspect Peter Pan peanut butter and certain batches of Wal-Mart's Great Value house brand — both manufactured by ConAgra Foods Inc.

Shoppers across the country were warned to throw out jars with a product code on the lid beginning with "2111," which denotes the plant where it was made.

Oh hell. I just checked my jars and they both have 2111 on them. And I've been sick for a while. AND it started right around the last time I went to the store....

If you add enough Karo, any brand of peanut butter will taste good.

The scan in the OP was from my 'Great Value' jar.

AFAIK, Wal-Mart is the only place that sells 'Great Value'... no pun intended.

    Hrm...

I haven't tried that in years. Maybe I'll revisit Jif.

I've always been a Skippy (chunky style) kinda guy, but I don't do the shopping these days...

I'll tell you what -- I got sick as a sheepdog eating Laura Scudder All Natural Peanut Butter once -- probably the same salmonella thing. Man, was I sick?!?!?!?! Probably should have gone to the hospital...

Anyway, everyone better check their peanut butter lids!

I had what I assume was salmonella poisoning once from some chicken, about 25 years ago.

It was a frozen uncooked chicken breast that I cooked in the microwave. When I was eating it, I suddlenly came upon a part of it that was raw.

I remember it fondly to this day. I was soo sooooooo sick for about a week. I moved into the den to be closer to the bathroom.

Of course now I know better than to try to cook raw chicken in the microwave oven; anything like popcorn chicken or tenders or nuggets or anything like that MUST say "Fully Cooked" on the package, and I have an electronic probe thermometer to ensure that foods reach proper temp before serving.
    Good luck

Great Value is a WalMart-owned trade name (http://www.upcdatabase.com/item.asp?upc=0078742369990). So I guess there is no question whether the store brand or the national is better/different anymore, at least not if your national brand of choice is Peter Pan.

I love peanut butter, but I've never really been loyal to one particular brand. Unfortunately (or forutnately, depending on how you look at it) I am currently out of peanut butter. I can't remember, though, if the last jar I had was Peter Pan or Wegmans (local grocery chain) brand. Those are the two my girlfriend usually buys.

When this story broke yesterday both of the 11:00 news anchors on our ABC affiliate went home and checked their pantries and both had "2111" jars, so of course they had to show them on the air.

Is there anyone with Wal-Mart PB who DOESN'T have a jar from Lot 2111...? Sheesh!

They must've harvested every peanut on the planet that season.
