    Server move: what you think?

Hello. I am currently on hoth and as stated by tech support, the server is overloaded and I need to move to a *new* reseller server in order to avoid the issues (server going down a few times a day).
Now I really don't have that much of a problem moving to a new server because I only have 3 websites on there, no complication about SSL etc... and we don't use that much of resources any how. Total bandwidth is only about 15 gb for all the websites.
I guess JPC can just tar my account and untar to the new server. Is that correct?
What really concerns me is that moving to a *new* server will only solve the problem for a short while, and the server then will be overloaded, and the need for move again. Its and endless loop eh?
I thought residing on a somewhat mature server ensures stable service, but apparently that's not the case.
    Appreciate your inputs.

I think they probably use rsync, but I don't know that for sure. No matter...

I've moved several times at JagPC -- sometimes because the server died and couldn't be resurrected -- sometimes because I requested it -- once because I was kicked off a server. Usually it's a seamless process. I think 'we' only had problems once.

Personally, I don't have any problems or concerns with switching servers. They handle the whole thing, and It's always been for the better good...

If you have any Ecom Sites (that use Custom SSL which ALL Ecom sites should) or sites that use Dedicated IP's exprect some problems, Other than that you should have no issuses..

If you use 3pp DNS make sure you Adjust your TTL a few days before you move to elminate downtime.

As far as a Mature Server, Jag replaced Servers as they age, so even if your on a stable box, at some point your server will be replaced and you will be moved.

While most people's general experience is that once you've been on a server for a while it tends to be more stable, the logic behind that observation doesn't really apply to reseller servers, IMHO. JPC puts a new server online and fills it, then moves to the next new server, and so on. Once tehy've decided that a server is full it is closed to new accounts. While they do the same thing with reseller accounts on reseller servers, the resellers are still free to add new accounts forever, so there is always a chance of a new user bringing down the server, even if it has been stable for years.

They probably use the WHM version of pkgacct to move your account.

It will probably go smoothly if the new server already has people on it running the applications that you're using. The major problems I've had were things like GDlib not being installed, and things like that. Also any custom settings made to your hosting package can be lost and need to be re-modified by support.

Their IP forwarding, if they can use it for you works very nicely.

    Enjoy!
    Good luck

    Same Boat

I guess we are in the same boat. We are also on hoth. The difference being we have 21 accounts hosted. One with some IP specific things running that is going to be a pain to change and keep the customer happy. We also have SSL. Support offered to move us to another reseller server, but my question is, if we have them move us to another server will we be facing the same problem down the road ?

I think Jason explained it very well: there's probably always a greater risk of that on a reseller server, as it is much more likely to get new / different stuff thrown at it later in its lifetime than a shared server that won't get any new end-user accounts after the initial month or so.

Your best bets may be to either stay small and relatively easy to move (like the topic starter), or to grow on to a dedicated machine with no problems other than those caused by yourself / your very own clients.

    Merci

    Thanks for your inputs.
The server just went down again. Looks like I have no choice.
Just a few more questions before I take the plunge:
+ Do I need to change name servers?
+ How should I phrase for IP forwarding (????) with support so they get what I am talking about
+ Would there be any changes to passwords (logins, sql, etc).
+ How much downtime should I expect?
+ Is it reasonable to request to have new account setup on the new server and the old account still running for a few days so that unexpected problems arised can be fixed with minimal downtime.

    Thanks again.

If so when and how did it go?
    Did you encounter any problems?

The server doesn't suck, its just old. We need to take its license away so It doesn't cause any more collisions!
