non US hosting recommendations

DISCLAIMER: NO I'M NOT MOVING, just need additional hosting elsewhere.

I have need of a hosting service that is not subject to United States laws. The more like Jag the better. =)

Can anyone recommend any one in particular?

What laws are you looking to aviod? Keep in mind even if you host it elsewhere if you or the company are traced to it YOUR still liable for any Criminal and Civil Damages even if the Infraction occurs over seas. They may not be able to touch the servers, but they can get YOU.

Also keep in mind that most Contries have WORSE laws than the US. you need to pick what laws you need to aviod before any Recommendations are given, I assume your looking at Avoiding DMCA, good luck, Currently China, Russia and Sweden seem to be safe heavens, but with the WTO putting pressure on these countries I dont think it will be long before you see them "fall in line" with the MPAA/RIAA Extortion Team

Eh.. that's assuming HE is in the US..

IMHO it's not so much the laws, as the justice system and the distance. IF an MPAA/RIAA like was to play their extortion tactics on me (which would then be about something in my JagPC account, as that's all they can possibly claim to be in "their jurisdiction"), I would most likely be completely unable to fight them in the US system. Just not possible to mount a defense, especially not from overseas, without a huge budget, which would most likely remain largely lost even in case of a clear win. That starts right with the simplest of things: being able to appear in court in person - clearly important - which for a US court would be a trip of at least $1,000 for me.

So, if that were to ever happen, I'd probably move my stuff over to something here in the Netherlands. Not because the laws are all different or because there'd be no similar party here that could make the same claims, but for the simple reason I'd have to deal with only one justice system, the one closest to home, the one I am most familiar with.

Anyways; he was asking for applicable law, so perhaps his motivation is all different.

That is Sealand. The stories make for a fun read, but the hosting is very questionable.

Gotta say, I'm starting to side with the other respondants that get a fishy feeling. Sure, it takes double checking to find a host that will give you the safe feeling that you can publish stuff someone might take offense from, without suddenly finding it gone based on some "pressure" from a lawyer. However, Jag has already confirmed in your other thread that it is such a host. If you have something to host that you feel can't find a place in the US, Canada, or Europe, then either you are a tad too paranoid, or you have something I don't want to help you find you a place for either.

then why do you need it outside of the US? Far from being perfect I dont think we have bastarized the 1st amendment just yet, I am sure that will come very soon, as all the rest are gone, but for now it is still there

@Gwaihir : I am thinking of ways to alleviate jag of even the worry of any such stuff I mentioned in the other thread.

While one is completely free to say what one will, ones neighbors are also free to violently make you stop if they want to. So certain precautions must be taken to avoid violence.

That is why I have always fought for net Anonymity, and why I was agaist the requirment for real whois data in the whois database. I am also glad many companies have sent a big FU to ICANN by offerings, in alot of cases free, Anonymous WhoIs Listings.


I still fail to see how overseas hostings will protect you from this however,

I can not send a Request to Jag for your Info. so your Neighbors cant either. Unless your Breaking some law (speaking out is not agaist the law) then the government cant get access to it either.

Something smells fishy here, Something more than being afraid of political speech. Infacty your privacy is probably MORE secure from everyone besides our government here on US Soil, Many countries have ZERO privacy laws
