    To each his own...

I don't play by the normal rules!

In my case, I don't install Firefox on computer[s], at least not in a catholic sense.

I run Portable Firefox and carry it around in my pocket!

I run Portable Firefox on a virtual drive, encrypted with AES-Twofish-Serpent via TrueCrypt.

I also turn off anything and everything that communicates with Mozilla & Google in the background.

I *imagine* some other thinking ppl are doing the same!

    So, the answer is, no...

    Yes, 'thinking' ppl...

After all, isn't that the whole purpose of automatic updating, as in...

"Duh! I'm too lazy and stupid to do it myself?"

ya know.... that could easily be taken as an insult to not just my own but everyone who allows automatic processes to take place on there computers...

    Thankfully, I know better.

Maybe Vin should have said... "Other people who aren't paranoid."

Perhaps I'm naive, but I look at the Mozilla products as fairly safe for automatic upgrades. I have both Firefox and Thunderbird set to do that on my system. They are about the only programs I allow to auto-upgrade however.

    Heh!

    I suggest you try this:

    Start -> Run -> cmd -> netstat 3

...and see if you spot any suspicious activity taking place in the background.

yeah, done that a thousand times and no, there isn't.

I don't need to be paranoid or rude to keep my computer secure and safe.

    Um...

    1. A little paranoia is a good thing!
    2. Sorry if I *sounded* rude.

Perhaps, "other like-minded ppl"' would have *sounded* better than "other thinking ppl"...

Personally, I don't like programs 'phoning home' in the background. By default, Firefox sends YOUR info to Mozilla and Google, et al -- and you can take that to the bank!!!

Ask Spath about this! He's the one that clued me in, and upon investigation, he was right...

Good reading: Google making more inroads into privacy?

Thanks for pointing out Spath's post about that. I completely missed it when it was originally posted.

Now turned OFF in my browser. I believe I'm savy enough not to fall for any of those phishing sites and their scams anyway.

never used the phishing things ma self.
you gotta be pretty new to the internet or hiding under a rock to not know about them and take extra care with important sites like banking, ebay, paypal and so forth.

Hey, I took what you said seriously. I was just trying to be funny when I made the comment about "other people who aren't paranoid."

And yeah, I guess because I turned that Firefox setting off, that DOES make me a little paranoid.
