The best I've found, and it's *freeware* for Outlook Express [only], is PicoBackup Outlook Express Edition

Its really easy you don't need any software.

    Open outlook express.
    Go too "Tools - Options"
Then in the options window click the "Maintenance" tab.
Then look for the "Store folder" button.
Click that and in the little window that opens highlight the location and copy.

Open Run "Start - Run" past the location into the run field and click "ok"

In t he folder that opens copy all the files in there to another location (ie, CD, DVD, External hard drive and so forth)

    Good point, I guess...

I suppose it all depends on what arianetwork means by "backup".

OE is really weird and hard to backup (and restore) in my humble estimation.

    PB123 makes it foolproof!

foolproof, but still manual labor . All you need to do is include those folders both Zacrife and that tool point at in whatever backup scheme you use.

The weird part is that you can't do bits and pieces: you have to backup / restore all a user's e-mail at once. There's no way to make a selection of folders / mails to backup / restore. So, if you ever change computers, move your old mail over at once. Don't wait till you've got important mail on both, as there's no merging the two stacks of mail.

I've been thinking about this thread - sort of haunts me actually...

To you ppl that *think* backing up Outlook Express an easy task - have you actually tried to restore same???

Dude, I've had to restore OE three times since the beginning of the year - two times they were mine - and one for a friend - and it's the most jacked up procedure you can imagine. Damn near impossible, actually...

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I don't think so...

OE writes crap all over the place - half in folders - half in registry. Sure, OE has export feature[s], but most of them won't restore using the OE import feature[s], even if you use CVS delimiters. And, trying to resurrect this stuff, once a drive crashes, sucks big time!

    I dunno... wisen me up!

I don't find it difficult at all, I backup the folder I mentioned and then the rules from the registry if I want to restore then I go to the window that tells me get the folder number (if its changed) copy that then use notetab pro and change all the old folder numbers to the new ones through all the files.

Then I edit the registry files I backed up just double click the registry files to put them registry. Piece of cake with chocolate sauce!

At least, thats what I think I did, I haven't used outlook express in a while having moved to online email using roundcube!

    Yeah, that sounds easy, Zac.

I have tried to restore an Outlook system from a corrupted .pst file and it took a very long time.

This pico thing almost makes me wish I was using Outlook Express.
    Good luck

I've been running Mozilla ThunderBird for 2-3 days, and so far I think it sucks! And, I'm a Big Mo' diehard - been running Fx since day one, yada, yada...

Do you use POP3 or IMAP?

Personally, I can't stand POP3, and my experience, so far, is ThunderBird blows @ IMAP...

For instance, their stupid 'Junk" filter - I can't get that thing to move 'spam' to save my life!

    SUP with that, hillbilly?
