Lightbulb Firefox Users - Sync Your Bookmarks Using JagPC

Any of you guys running Firefox on multiple computers - want to keep your bookmarks sync'ed across machines - but don't trust uploading them to Google Bookmarks or whomever?

I installed this cool add-on tonight...

    Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer 1.0.1

...and figured out to store the bookmarks on JagPC instead of using third-party servers.

Maybe this is old news to everyone, and you're already doing it, but if anyone wants to know how to set it up, let me know and I'll walk you through it.

http://customsoftwareconsult.com/ext...febe/febe.html don't know if anyone knows about this but i'm sure everyone does.

It backs up your firefox including plugins, bookmarks, cookies, settings, everything.

I guess we are all on our own walk through life, eh?

Syncs and backups are two totally different things, except in Ron's mind...

Depends on which way you sync.
    Good luck

Thanks for the information Vin - after years of using Maxthon and Proxomitron I am just this week switching from once in a while with Firefox to everyday use with Firefox. I have found all the extensions I need to make the features the same and some BETTER! THis extension is a bonus! I have been copying my setups manually on thumb between work and home as I perfect my setup.

    I love ADBLOCK PLUS!!!!!

From one ex-Proxomitron user to a current one, I'd highly recommend trying a hardware proxy firewall in between your PC and your broadband/ISP modem. Get some older hardware, load up IPCop (a Smoothwall derivative), install the Copfilter suite and enable/tweak privoxy and you'll be sailing carefree and quite secure.

Sorry about the interruption, but such a setup will relieve you of needing some of the extra security plugins you'll likely attach to your local browsers. The upside is your whole network will reap the rewards, so tweaking each node won't be required. Also, the firewall can take some processing load off your local node.

    Heh! Foxmark rocks!!!

Saving the db to your JagPC account (instead of using their servers) makes it secure...

Let me do a tutorial here, in case anybody wants to try this...

    1. Go to cPanel -> Domains -> Subdomain

    2. Add Subdomain
      • bookmarks.example.com

    3. Go to cPanel -> FTP -> FTP Accounts

    4. Add FTP Account
      • Login: bookmarks
      • Password: whatever
      • Directory: /home/example/public_html/bookmarks

    5. Install the Foxmarks 1.0.1 Firefox add-on.

    6. When Firefox restarts, a setup wizard will appear. Cancel it and click "Don't automatically start wizard again".

    7. Go to Foxmarks -> Options

    8. In the Setup tab, enter the username/password for the FTP account you created, and click all 3 boxes.
      • Username: bookmarks@example.com
      • Password: whatever

    9. In the Other tab
      • Type: FTP
      • Server: bookmark.example.com
      • Path: /

    That's it!

If you did everything right (and the subdomain propagated immediately) you're good to go...

BTW, specify whatever username you want - I just used 'bookmarks' as an example.

Just updated today Vin. What is with the new file name extension? I use four different computers weekly and this is a handy tool. Especially when I use Keyword shortcuts as extensively as I do.

I just installed this, and it connects to my server and says it did the sync successfully. Manual upload seems to work. Yet I can't find the bookmarks.

    Help please?

How can people look at the space shuttle and say "Design!" yet look at its designers and say "Accident!"?

What directory did you set up to upload them to on your server? You had to pick one, that's where she be....

I set up a subdirectory per the instructions above (which I followed before realizing there was an updated version): bookmarks.mysite.com. It has the .json file but nothing else.

Today, even though I didn't turn off my computer for the night or reset the browser cache, the bookmarks appear, in spite of the fact that it always tells me "bad url" on my Mac but everything's fine on the pc. Go figure.

    Yep!

You can use whatever you want for a path on 'your' JagPC server, and whatever file name[s] you wish.

    Personally...

I made a password protected subdomain on JagPC: bookmarks.mysite.com

For the bookmark URL in Foxmarks: ftp://bookmarks.mysite.com/bookmarks.vindsl

For the password URL in Foxmarks: ftp://bookmarks.mysite.com/passwords.vindsl

    EDIT

BTW, I was involved with the beta testing of Foxmarks version 2 - but the author suspended the test a month or so ago. I noticed a bug (of sorts), but don't have any way of reporting it, other than in the Foxmarks blog... or the Foxmarks Beta Wiki.

Anyway, make sure that you do an about:config in Firefox - and do a search (filter) for foxmarks.url

It should read something like this...

    foxmarks.url;ftp://bookmarks.mysite.com/
    foxmarks.url-bookmarks;ftp://bookmarks.mysite.com/bookmarks.vindsl
    foxmarks.url-passwords;ftp://bookmarks.mysite.com/passwords.vindsl
