    vps .. proxy?

I'm stuck behind a draconian network system thats been screwing with freedom lately. Not only is the bitTorrent protocol completely blocked (not sure how yet, working on it) but any file that has the word torrent in its filename is being blocked. This among MANY other privacy concerns and the natural rebel in me wants to fark[florida] {fyi censors :fark.***** with them.

I own several VPSes and am interested in using one as a sort of proxy and secure data transmission between it and my machine.

I've done my research and there are a few promising ideas but a severe lack of documentation makes this a task I'm going to have to ask for help on.

Do you guys have any experience with doing something like this or could point me in a direction that might enhance my quest for knowledge?

I don't believe that JPC allows you to run any kind fo proxy service on any of their servers, so even if you were doing this for your use only you'd be in violation of the TOS.

P2P is being used for many legitimate purposes and these are only going to increase. Don't blame the technology, blame the users abusing it.

Really? While I know it could be used for legitimate purposes with publicly exposed lists and hubs and whatever.... show me one!

I don't think the technology should be banned either, but please don't insult our intelligence. I'm sure the OP was just trying to share his/her wedding video with their closest 3,000 friends. sheeeesh.

When a technology becomes used primarily for illegal purposes, the technology itself will come under attack. If 99% of handguns were used in robberies or murders they would have been banned years ago. If 99% Water Bongs were used to smoke pot instead of tobacco, ... oh wait, they were classified as paraphernalia and banned.
    Good luck

Linux distros. I've downloaded CentOS DVDs over BitTorrent before.

    Ok 2.

But really? How were you confident it wasn't compromised? Did you get the hash or MD5 or whatever from the main distro site? Why not d/l it from there?
    Good luck

LOL is that still 1 or does that count as 2? heh.

I know there are lots of uses for it, just like I can smoke tobacco using zig-zag rainbow papers. It's just that I don't think that many people are using it for that purpose.
    Good luck

I have torrented large amounts of free, independent, copyleft, public domain, GPLed, creative commons or whatever music, videos, audiobooks, software etc.

There's quite a lot of it about when you stop to look.

Why not d/l it from there?
They've just given me free stuff; why add to their bandwidth bills?

I know World of Warcraft is utilizing it too and there's other games... that's 2 :P

But for a real eye opener and couple thousand more: http://www.bittorrent.com/nowplaying?csrc=splash

Video is what is going to make bittorrents the preferred method of distribution in the future.

OK OK, I concede. Bit torrent has lots of legit uses. I was wrong.

Soooo, what PC bit torrent client should I get that has no spyware, and no security issues and no adware, etc., etc.

I'd even pay for a good one if necessary.
    Good luck

One problem here... Comcast blocks all ports used by Bit Torrent
    -Daniel

If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce today would cost $100, get a million miles to the gallon, and explode once every few weeks.

My scripts never have bugs. They just develop random features.

Forgot to mention Kontiki for those of us in the UK.

As for clients, when I used windows, Azureus was my first choice I never felt the need to change. It seems to be slowly changing into some sort of glossy, commercial enterprise called Vuze. You may prefer to use BitTyrant.

    Known vulns in Azureus.

Change your ports. Look for trackers that don't use default ports like 6969. Use encryption to counter some forms of traffic-shaping. Your problem with Comcast runs deeper than ports though:

    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,18323368?hilite=

If you're using linux: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp –dport $TORRENT_CLIENT_PORT –tcp-flags RST RST -j DROP

I tried to install Azureus a few weeks ago and it knocked me offline for nearly a day. The install process did something to my routers that forced one of them to be hard reset. Knocked my entire network offline. I don't think I'll try it again for a long while.

    Next?

What about the "genuine bittorrent client" at bittorrent.com?
    Good luck
