What FTP Client Are You Using?

    Hey everyone -

I've been on Jaguar hosting forever and a day - just opened a new account for some other projects.

Recently, I've been having alot of trouble FTPing uploads. SmartFTP just stops - and AceFTP, CuteFTP and FileZilla all seem to sort of hang on directory uploads. When I upload ZIP files the file permissions seem to screw up.

I figure I'm doing something wrong..or could do it better. Just trying to figure out a more efficient way to do this if anyone has any good suggestions.

BTW - I think I like CuteFTP the best - at least it doesn't go completely FUBAR when something happens. AceFTP was FAST but crashed constantly.

    Thanks in advance!

    Dan

Let me suggest that you download and use WinSCP and transmit your files securely. Even if you don't care about the file content, FTP passes your password around the 'net in the clear.

WinSCP runs over SSH, which should be enabled on your server by default.

    Good luck

I use Internet Explorer for FTP... really!

    Why?

Because you can find it on every Windows computer!

Here's an old thread showing you how...

Total Commander for FTP & a whole heap of other things.

Also this plugin for Firefox: http://fireftp.mozdev.org/

But as Ron suggested use WinSCP for uploading files to your server.

I use WinSCP for just about everything these days, even use it in standard FTP mode of a couple of servers on which I don't have access to anything better.

But, as others have said, you really should be using an encrypted connection to the JPC servers since they support it. If you don't like WinSCP a lot of FTP clients support SFTP these days (from your list I know Filezilla does, but I can't comment on the others), just make sure you check the "Use SFTP" or "Use a secure connection" option.

I should also not that it doesn't sound like a problem with your FTP software, but maybe with the server or your network connection. Are the problems constant? Related to this new account only?

My first step would be to do a traceroute when I start noticing problems and then, depending on what I could get from that, I'd consider opening a ticket with support.

I myself am a FlashFXP fan. I have been using ever since I got my original xbox. Very reliable. As far as I know.. SSH isn't run by it. I have never had any troubles and if you are looking to purchase a good non SSH ftp program, give the free demo a shot

    WinSCP for me

Speaking of WinSCP and SSH has anyone else on a VPS who has changed their SSH port notice a slow down on speeds. I heard that some ISPs throttle down little used ports. Anyone know of a way to check the speed of various ports on an ISP?

    Heh! I created a monster!

I've been using WinSCP so long, I remember when didn't support FTP.

Don't get me wrong - I'm a WinSCP fanboui. I'm the one that introduced YOU to it...

I'm just saying I use MSIE for regular ol' unsecure FTP.

For anybody interested in trying WinSCP, here's a tutorial on configuring it for JagPC:

Vin, I don't know what you're talking about.

    I wrote WinSCP.

There, I just wrote it again.

    Good luck

Another WinSCP user here. I've also got FileZilla installed, which I use once in a while.

I use WinSCP the majority of the time. I also have FileZilla installed but it is set for secure connections for my sites.

In the past I've used Cute and a few others. I like WinSCP.
