    The value of backups!

Well i found my self in a pickle tonight..

I was tweaking one of my SMF forums that took FOREVER to setup the theme to match my WP theme and what do you know, I screwed it up... BIG TIME!

I accidentally blocked admin access and when setting up an SEO plugin, hosed my htaccess file... Yes I know, issues... Should have been paying closer attention!

BUT all was not lost! The DB was not affected, only a bunch of the source files...

    **ENTER LAST NIGHT'S BACKUP TARBALL**

What do you know, 5 minutes later, i had the forum back up from a backup from last night! Since the DB was not screwed up, I was able to keep it and just reupload the source.

    The reason behind this post:

To demonstrate one of the MANY reasons why EVERYONE, yes that includes YOU, should have backups on hand of their accounts...

Now if I didn't have these backups, i would have spent hours trying to fix it... then I would have just given up and thrown the towel in and started over!
    -Daniel

If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce today would cost $100, get a million miles to the gallon, and explode once every few weeks.

My scripts never have bugs. They just develop random features.

I couldn't agree more: not having backups of your own accounts is playing with fire and one day you will pay the price for that.

I allways have a backup of my accounts at home and I even upload a backup of my accounts to a friends server just to be absolutely sure. And I also inform the people I host that they have to keep backups themselves.

Never, ever just depend on the backups made by your hostingprovider. Something can always go wrong, even with the best plans.

My father used to work a the legal department of a bank and they had thousands of files. One day the server had a crash and all was lost. No problem, there was a backup.....

And then they found out that the backup itself was corrupt and so they had to re-enter all files from hardcopy (which they fortunately had), it took them two years.

That's why I make regular backups of my accounts, just to be sure!

I keep telling myself to do that and I do not listen. I just redid my main system with fdisk and reinstall of everything! It took a couple days and I am still not all setup yet. Need to calibrate my monitors. I have to do it this time - I just have to. You hear that Frank - DO IT!

    Heh!

    It rocks... and locks too!

I had a Seagate going bad, a few years ago, and used Norton Ghost to mirror it before it failed.

    LoL!

Norton Ghost made an EXACT copy to the new drive, bad (locked) sectors and all...

Okay Daniel we will leave that to Vin. I will for sure and tell it to Frank too so he knows.

    Hahaha!

Now as far as Acronis... Never used the trueimage, but I do have an old version of the partition manager.

I have an old open source disk cloning software on a CD somewhere I use for complete clones.

For just backups, all my important info is stored on a couple of fedora file servers here at the house, and then usually once per week I will use an NAS I have that came with backup software to tarball those file servers and store them on the NAS.

Like I said... SOMEWHERE... as in I don't know where it is at right this moment... it could be anywhere from my office to my server closet... NO CLUE... haven't made a complete clone in several months

And it only directly clones to another hard disk.. Can't be used to make an image disk.

At work we use some ridiculously expensive imaging software that doesn't even work half the time... Don't remember the name of it either!
