    Is this a good deal?

I don't follow PCs at all anymore. Just too busy and too uninterested, really.

But this ad caught my eye. Seems like a lot of good stuff for short money.
Is the CPU and speed up to snuff? Is the video on the mb, and is it OK for a non-gamer?
I have just installed a 400GB SATA-II drive in my old machine and it so soooo fast and quiet! I am using less than 100GB, it might make a wonderful backup drive to a 500GB primary

quad core machine, 3G DDR RAM, 500G SATAII drive, etc. $600 (refurb)

I don't follow the pricing too much either. Too volatile.

On the whole, it seems pretty decent. It seems to have everything you would "need."

    Caveats:

    1) The memory slots are filled to max, so adding more would require dumping two modules at a time (dual channel required?). It has about 3 Gigs which is all that its preinstalled OS will handle. If you wanted 4+, you'd need to upgrade both the memory modules and the OS (to a 64-bit MSWin OS). The chipset can handle 8 Gigs, so the rate limiting component is not the motherboard but the RAM sticks.

    2) The power supply seems a bit weak for all of the hardware. If you start loading up drives, it may be insufficient.

    3) The "refurbished" tag concerns me. Is it merely case cosmetics? That can be overlooked. Hard drives, however, are another matter entirely. I would never accept a refurb on a HD. Same for RAM unless it has passed the appropriate memtests.

Overall, it seems pretty loaded for a 32-bit setup. It might be modern enough to get you through the Spring.

What else/better could I get pre-built and delivered with an OS for $600?
    Good luck

    Tuna Fish....

More of a recession with huge inflation.
On a positive note, my mortgage will look puny after 4 or 5 years at 12% inflation.
    Good luck

Oh, I get the connection to President Bush now. The $600 "rebate". Gotchya.

Maybe that's clever marketing. But it had nothing to do with why I am/was interested in that machine or that price range. Looking for cheap/fast - biggest bang for the small buck. That's all.

Current PC is starting to get grey around the temples.
    Good luck

    Ron,

Newegg.com is the place to go. Build your own unit. Sign up for their email specials and watch for a good deal on each piece of hardware needed.

My daughter bought a Gateway (was too impatient for me to build her one) and I am still having problems with getting it tweaked. Vista updates keep puking, some drivers are not installed properly and Gateway's site is well.... I hate it!

Build your own and you will be much happier.
