Here's a Bit of Irony for you...

My 12 year-old Slackware server just puked - power outage...

How old is it? Hasn't been booted in, like 3 years - and the root password makes reference to how Netscape Rules and IE drools - but not exactly in those words...

3 of the 4 drives went 'read only' - been FSCK'ing itself for over 24 hours now!

    Bwahahahahaha!

Anybody that's been around here for a while knows that I'm laughing at...

Hey, it happens to the best of us, yes?

That happened on our debian server. But the drives went read only while it were on!

And the server had 100% cpuload and hardware interupts.
    ....
We just left it on for 3 days more to see what happened...

I should have put that differently...

This Slackware box hasn't been RE-booted in, like, 3 years. It's been running 24/7/365 for 12 years, and the last time it had to be rebooted was the same situation - we lost power momentarily, probably followed by a spike or two, and it locked up on us.

    LoL!

I don't know if this thing is gonna come back up this time or not... but it's trying...

The irony is, all the arguments that ppl make about servers going down at web hosts should apply to our personal servers too, right? But...

When it comes right down to it, I'll bet 99.9% of 'us' are no better prepared for catastrophe than 'they' are - probably less...

Norton Ghost has saved my hide a few times. I keep a dedicated box with a mirrored RAID as a standby unit and upload ghosted drives/partitions of all my network PCs. Once the ghosted material is uploaded, I turn off the unit and it just sits waiting for the next update.

I've not lost data in years despite drive failures that happen somewhat regularly. An occasional application may get a little dated, but that's not really a problem.

Lot's of ways to skin the backup cat, but this episodic routine works pretty well. I'd say Norton Ghost and Norton Partition Magic are two of my favorite utilities.

All the servers i manage all have UPS's and DDS hp tape back up drives, so back up and power problems are not an issue.

In the last year or 2 i started using ghost enterprise which is ace, before that it cast large numders of machine is used ghost casting which was slower and if one pc had problem its would fail them all.

How do you rate the Comodo SSL and Hacker Proof Services?
