Question Firefox 3 Beta 5 - Anybody else running it ???

Just curious... Seems to be running great!

    EDIT

BTW, I always run Firefox Portable... Why limit yourself?

And, yes, I'm the one that put a bee in John T. Haller's bonnet, for making a portable version of WinSCP available!

DISCLAIMER Any resemblance between the views expressed above and those of the owners and operators of this system is purely coincidental. Any resemblance between these views and my own are non-deterministic. The existence of Vin DSL is questionable. The existence of views in the absence of anyone to hold them is problematic. The existence of the reader is left as an exercise in the second-order coefficient.

Pros: It flies! But, that might be because...

Cons: There aren't many compatible extensions yet.

    Supposedly: It uses less memory.

Seems perfectly usable to me, and I'm an early adopter, so...

I think I'll continue to stick with IE7 for now, we'll see.

    w00t!

Adblock Plus has been updated for FX3!

That completes all the essential extensions, IMHO.

    • Adblock Plus
    • DownThemAll!
    • Password Exporter
    • PDF Download
    • User Agent Switcher
    • Web Developer

I can 'live' without the rest for now!

I haven't tried Firefox 3 yet and I don't know if there is a big change to the extensions architecture, but I know that when Firefox 2 came out (especially when it was in beta) and most of the extensions out there were showing as incompatible with the new version I found a workaround. Instead of allowing Firefox to automatically install the extension, right click on the link and choose "Save Link As..." You'll download an xpi file, this is nothing more than a renamed zip file. Change the extension to .zip and open the file with your favorite zip utility. Find the install.rdf file inside and open it in your favorite text (or XML) editor. From there find the <em:maxVersion> tag(s) and bump the number up to your current version number. Save the install.rdf file and update the zip, then rename the zip back to the .xpi extension. Finally, drag the xpi file into any open Firefox window and you should get the familiar "Software Installation" dialog you are used to seeing when you install extensions.

This method doesn't always work, but most of the times I've tried it has. Worst-case, if Firefox doesn't restart after doing this, restart it in safe mode (there should be an icon in your start menu or use "firefox.exe -safe-mode" from the command line) and then remove the extension.

Of course, my advice causes you to completely trash your system I will disavow all knowledge of ever posting this message. Try it at your own risk.

    I'll have to admit...

I've really let this one slip through the cracks - which is why I posted this thread!

Unlike my 'normal' self, who maintains the nightly/trunk builds, yada, yada, yada - Firefox 3 snuck up on me.

Usually, I'd be over in the Mozilla Forums, showing them how to fix it...

Anyway, the only other extension that I REALLY miss is Foxmarks - which I maintain (the db) on JagPC servers, not theirs.

Foxmarks is a really weird & touchy extension, especially using 'your own' server instead Foxmark servers, so I don't want to take a chance and allow perps to get access to Jag servers by hijacking my browser, or whatever.

It takes a village, you know?!?!?

    I digress...

With all due respect, jason, this isn't the time to be monkeying around with software - 'rigging' it!

Have you read the white paper on how 65% of all new releases, et al, contain malware?

    Be careful out there!

I usually wait for the full release version and wait for all the betas to be done. I have heard another person say that beta 5 of Firefox version 3 is VERY stable, and it is much improved over version 2's problem with memory.

    WoW!

I just wiped Flash 9.0 r.115 off my drive and installed 9.0 r.124...

    What a difference!

Firefox 3 Beta 5 and Shockwave Flash 9.0 r.124 work GREAT together!

YouTube is actually fun to watch now - no notchiness, if you will...

    Heh! I was desperate!

I got accepted to the Foxmarks Beta Test Program.

2/3 of Foxmarks 2.0.44.17 works on JagPC - guess I'll have to fix it for them...
