    Netbooks

I was thinking they could be a good backup/sidekick laptop since they are relatively inexpensive but I don't know if they are worth it. The Dell Mini 9 and the Lenovo version (I believe it's called an IdeaPad) are kind of intriguing.

I wouldn't use one as my main PC but as a secondary machine and for travel it could be good enough. I do not know anyone who owns one. What is everyone's thoughts on these?

    Heh!

I know a guy that has a MSI Wind Netbook, and he's gonna put a 500gb Samsung HD in it.

How's that for a backup/sidekick? I'm thinking about getting one myself...

I could "backup" ever machine in my house with that!

A buddy of mine sells the Asus EPCs in his shop. I've always been a fan of Asus products and I've played with the models and his shop a little bit and I like em. They aren't something I'd want to try doing Photoshop work or anything like that on (because of the screen size, not the resource power), but for a portable email checking, upload photos on vactaction kind of thing they'd be perfect.

Yep! I have a 15.4" Toshiba A215 right now, and as much as I love it, it's really too big for mobile use. That is, while it works out great on conference tables and the hotel room, e.g. desktop usage, it's really too big for my lap, on airplane snack tables, as so forth.

I've got an old 12" Fujitsu LifeBook and an even older 9.5" Epson Equity LT, and I always considered them to be the 'perfect size'!

Having given this a lot of thought, I'll never buy anything over 13" again. When it comes to lappys, less is more!

Well, I just bought my first Netbook - an Asus Eee PC 1000HD. They were on sale at Target, last week, for $249.

Heh! Did you know Asus makes 27 different models of the Eee PC now? And, there's more coming everyday!

    http://event.asus.com/eeepc/comparis...comparison.htm (Asus.com - Eee PC™ Comparison List)

My 1000HD came with (yikes) XP Home Edition, but I quickly took care of that:

I'm multi-booting XP and Ubuntu 9.04 with a custom kernel from Array.org - works great, so far!

Yeah, Asus and Microsoft have decided to join forces to turn the netbook into ... just another laptop.

I don't hate Windows either - I just hate the 1990's XP Teletubbies GUI.

There's something about it that offends me... "Home", so called, is even worse!

    I'll have to say...

This 'thing' has been a pleasant surprise! I thought I would be returning it the next day - but it's the perfect size (10-inch) if nothing else.

I find myself carrying it around the house, like a book, which I never did with my lappy. I've even taken up computing on the loo!

    So, yes, just another laptop...

I love the XP GUI although I am getting used to Vista now that I have it loaded on my primary home PC.

And I'm not so sure whats so offensive about the home label. Seems fairly rational to me.

Too much blue, too much green, and I don't want a background that's pretty much designed to remind how much better it would be if I weren't at my PC working. ;o)

But once you turned all that off, it was pretty easy on the eye.

I was considering getting a netbook in case I had to be somewhere and get some work done but after attempting to use nixcore and a few other sites I frequent on a 10" screen with a tiny keyboard I realized I needed a full size laptop.

If your looking to buy a netbook make sure you try to use it for what you want to do with it before you but it

Ended up getting an Inspiron from Dell but it hasn't shipped yet

I'm forced to use XP at work, so I made my own theme. It's golden-colored and rather regal looking...

As for the Asus Netbook, I wiped the partition (again) and installed Eeebuntu Standard 3. This is a distro designed in the U.K. and I'm loving it!

It's based on Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop with Eee PC kernel/utilities/drivers installed out-of-the-box and a suitable theme.

Very impressive! Makes my Eee PC look like an Apple MacBook...
