I participate on several sites around the world, using various nicks - mod & admin a few, blah, blah, blah - as I'm sure many of you do.

I've been closely watching the progression of various BBS/Forums distros over the years, as both a user and a mod/admin.

vBulletin FTW!

One of the 'big sites' I get on is Honda-Tech. They've been using RelayNet ZeroForum for several years, but dumped them the other day.

In the process, they resurrected all the old, achieved threads into vB.

There are sites out there with even more members than that. I'm having a hard time recalling some of them right one, one that comes to mind is sitepoint but they are only at around 300,000 members and a lot less posts than the one you posted.

I believe that has been so heavily modded it no longer is phpbb.

Now lets compare performance, I just installed eAccelerator and I'm using default config at the moment. Probably about 50 people "online":
