People are lazy and like cool and new fancy things that mean less "work".

It also might be an amusing way to burn your house down while your conveniently not there.

I've been harping about stupid things like for years now, too many things use technology because they can and not necessarily because they have too. $200 car key anyone?

As far as coffee makers go the next one I buy is going to have a on/off button. If I can't find one I'm getting a stainless steel percolator for the stove.

I drink a LOT of coffee! Matter of fact, my whole family does - at least my mum, and ALL of my brothers and sisters - 3 or 4 pots a day, each. No kidding!

Personally, I've never found anything better than the classic Mr. Coffee machine - 2 on/off buttons - 1 for the brewer, 1 for the warmer. It uses GRAVITY to brew the coffee, not a pump.

Occasionally, I break a coffee pot. I pick these up at Salvation Army or Savers - 2 or 3 at a time - usually a buck or 2 each, and store them away.

These thrift stores usually have old skool Mr. Coffee brewers there too - but these tend to last forever... so I'm still running my original.

Having said that, the best coffee maker I've ever seen is made by Bunn aka Bunn-O-Matic.

http://www.bunnomatic.com/RETAIL/products/gr.html (1 on/off 'vacation' switch for the water heater)

The design is V similar to the classic Mr. Coffee machine, but it has a pre-heated water reservoir, pump, and patented spray head - makes a pot of coffee in less than 3 minutes - just like a professional coffee maker (cafes, restaurants, et cetera). You can think of it as a Mr. Coffee machine done right!

You can usually pick these up for around $100. I've never seen them heavily discounted, and never seen one in a thrift store.

Anyway, if you want a simple brewer that makes great coffee - something with bragging rights - that's THE one to buy, IMHO!

BTW, TA, Bunn coffee machines are made in America...

    That's why they're the best!

I've been brewing it and putting it in a insulated carafe. I'm saving about $15 a month in electric by my estimate plus the coffee stays warm and keeps that fresh brewed taste for as long as 12 hours.

My brother had a larger Bunn more of a restaurant type one and he said it was taking up too much electric to run it. Dumbass bought it brand new too. LOL It did make great coffee though.

Best coffee I ever had was from a special cup I had for camping. You dumped the grounds, cream, sugar and hot water right into the cup. The lid had a plunger with a fine screen so when you put it into the cup it would push all the grounds to the bottom.

    That's right Ron.

French presses make the best coffee. I've got a real nice one that's insulated like a thermos (got it from Campmor).

I think my brother has one, and I know a colleague had one a bunch of years ago. Everytime I've tasted coffee from one (like twice ) it has been way too strong for my tastes.

I also don't like Starbucks ("Charbucks") coffee.
    Good luck

I've got a Toastmaster coffee maker that I got pretty cheap at some closeout store a couple years ago after I broke the carafe on my trusty Proctor Silex and couldn't find a replacement that was the right height. It has a stainless steel carafe, so the coffee stays hot for a long time (but I've never kept coffee in it long enough to figure out how long). The only downside is that the opening in the pour spout is so small that its easier to just pull the lid off to pour a cup.

For camping I have an 8 (I think) cup Lexan French press that I found at Gander Mountain. It makes a great cup of coffee (I like it strong), but the coffee doesn't stay warm in it for long, even with the Neoprene wrap that came with it.

I saw that solo twice in some form. Too bad you can't hear the double bass well it's like a machine gun at some points and they don't show his feet as that's half of it.
