Question small gaming server - move up from shared hosting?

    Hi All,

Not sure if this might be better to open a support ticket, but here goes. :-)

Have been a very satisfied JagPC user for several years. Now my brother, brother-in-law and a few nieces and nephews want to play Call of Duty United Offensive on the Internet. We have tried a few of the "low cost" game servers out there, but the quality leaves A LOT to be desired!

Since I already have a shared web hosting account on JagPC, my budget and brain started working together and thought - what about a game server on JagPC?

I am guessing that the shared hosting plan cannot have any type of a game server, but I did see other posts saying that dedicated servers could run gaming servers.

Could someone kind of tell me where the "cut off" point is for a gaming server...what I mean is, what is the minimum package a person would need to have to run a small (10 users or less) game server occasionally? Not 24/7 or anything like that.

I have a fairly good computer background, but I don't know that I want to end up supporting a full server and I can't budget anything like that. Just wondering if a VPS or something like that would work and how much extra time and energy does it actually take to keep a server running or does JagPC do a bunch of that kind of stuff?

    Thanks for your help,
    Troy

Perhaps the hybrid vps would be right for you -- a fully managed VPS with limited accounts.

Do you really need something that powerful Ron? When you get down to it it's just communication software for the server isn't it?

Kind of curious myself, what's the minimum requirements for a game like that if you expect to serve say 24 people?

My assumption was that a regular VPS would be inadequate and a dedicated box would be overkill, but I could be way off.
    Good luck

I help run a number of counter-strike servers. I do not host them here at this time but I have tried the VPS here before for hosting it and for smaller game servers it would have worked fine. We host around 120 slots which requires 2 dual xeon servers. If you are only trying to run 10 people I would sign up for the 19.95 VPS and see how it performs. Keep an eye out on your bandwidth usage.

Before you buy the server you will first want to verify call of duty has a linux server out and you will want to get familiar with the linux install instructions.

On edit: I am assuming you are talking about the original call of duty. If you are taking about Call of Duty 4 you might need higher requirements, take a look at the minimum system requirements. I also dont recall CoD 4 having a linux server when we ran one back in the day, we had to use Windows (this might have changed, I remember there being talk about a linux server coming out).

JPC does offer Windows VPSes, too.
