    Linux for home computer?

How many people are using linux for their home computer? What are you using?

    IS there any drawbacks?

I am running windows 7, and actually I am pretty satisfied with it. It has given me no troubles.

I have always considered Linux for clients that always seem to get viruses, LOL!

The hurdle is, they never seem to understand that it will not be fully compatible with all windows software, etc. (Using add on software to emulate windows of course)

Which home computer? Hardly anyone I know only has one.

The computer on which I type this runs XP. I have a laptop with Window 7, only because it came pre-installed. I added the appropriate tweaks to make it more functional, that is more like XP.

The computer on my right and the computer on my left run Linux. The encompass backup, mail server, website testing and other functions.

Well, I am talking about your home user, that have family, kids, etc. Most homes have a computer that everyone shares.

I have Tower that has Windows 7 Ultimate that we all use, and then We have a couple laptops. I use a NAS unit that stores all the computers files/documents/pictures. The NAS unit is then backed up offsite automatically.

Works pretty nice for a home system. Work environment is totally different, which in you case would make sense.

Actually, I always was a fan of Windows XP.

    Hi Vinny,

Most people do use Microsoft, especially with kids, as that is what they learn on in school, etc. I don't mind it at all, and I experiment with Ubuntu and am going to try Mint next.

    Yeah, I know.

Most ppl eat dead animals, and die of cancer, too.

Nothing wrong with being a zombie. Enjoy!

I'm just not into that night-of-the-living-dead stuff - that's all.

    Heh! All joking aside...

For the most part, I run Ubu Dev Releases - currently 12.04 alpha 1.

Here's a nice video, someone made, showcasing Ubu 11.10 final:

At the 3 min mark, it shows the VinDSL Conky package in action (right-side of the screen)...

That's just the way I'm wired, Chief. I cannot stand it when things "just work". LoL!

And, when Canonical says alpha... they MEAN alpha! Exciting stuff -- makes you feel alive.

12.04 a1 has been a snooze, so far. It's gonna be a LTS (5-year support), and they don't want to get too experimental, just before the final release.

If I thought you were sincere, I would thank you, but its more sarcasm, but in light of being one of the nicest things you said on the forum, I will thank you for that.

Linux Mint has to be my Fav Distro I have ever used. I cant really place why, it just seems to fit how I work.

Here is what I have in my Home Right now

    Office:
    Toshiba Windows 7 Laptop
I use this for Alot of my Graphics Work, and for Accounting, Only has Adobe Suite and Quickbooks on it
    Linux Mint 10 Desktop
Core 2 Quad based, with Dual Head Video, 22in and 25in Monitors (the 22in is connected via KVM to the Laptop)
This is my Main PC, Development, Testing, General Use (posting here, reddit, etc),
    Living Room
Dual Core Atom Based Linux Mint 11 running XBMC to my 50in LG Plasma
Plays HD Movies Great..... over WiFi G
    Bed Room
Running Ubuntu 11.04 (upgraded from Mythbuntu 10.04 so it does not have all that Crap Ubuntu Pushed on everyone that VinDSL loves...) Core 2 Duo, up to 8 TB of Storage. This is my main Media Center PC, Runs XBMC and a few other background apps. Attached to my 42in LCD

Used to have more, but I have downsized on Physical Hardware..... Use VM's alot now...

I love Linux and aside from the few commercial applications that have no good alternatives (Adobe and Quick books) I have not looked back to windows, I probably use my Windows PC about 10 Hours a week. (unless I get a new site to design then it is more, but most of my work is programming so.,...)

As to Windows XP, Come on people that thing is over a decade old.... Get over it and Move on, XP IS DEAD.

As to Linux vs Windows. As with anything it depends on your needs, for 90% of the people out there They will go GREAT on linux, I am slowly tring to convert my Family away from windows because windows at the end of the day sucks, if it was not for the commercial software vendor continuing the monopoly cycle windows would die, if the Major Vendors had a Linux Verzion of their apps I do feel the Windows Market Share could be greatly reduced, esp if the Game Vendors took a more active Role in Linux Development. The only thing I know for sure is that NO ONE should own any Apple Products.....

If you have a Family that just uses their PC for Browsing and email, Linux is a WONDERFUL option, if you need an office suite, Open Office works, or you can install MS Office using Wine (I have a guide on installing office 2007 on Linux Mint 10) So using Linux as the main family PC should be explored, but it all comes down to your needs and what software you want, for most people they will have a much better experience with Linux simply because I believe it is EASIER to use than windows, and certainly the software management of modern Linux Desktop Distro's are far easier to use than windows. There is so many missed opportunities for PC Users and Software Vendors alike in the Linux world that is sad that Totalitarian companies like M$ and Apple continue to thrive.

Well, I gotta hand it to you... ya lit a fire under TA's (the_ancient) hairy palms.

Heh! Call him "Bud" and see what happens to you... LoL!

If your enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink: for in so doing you shall heap coals of fire on his head.
    Just saying...
