Depends on customer needs really but I like to use Wordpress for most. Fast setup with a professional looking site, highly customizable, easy to maintain, no extra software needed on their computer, multiple people can easily share webmaster duties, easy handoff when the webmaster changes, great for newbies.

Interesting. What are the benefits of FuelCMS and WolfCMS? Any particular kinds of needs they are best for?

While Wordpress has tried to convert at least unofficially to a CMS system, they are still at the core a Blogging Platform, and there is a large amount of BLOAT in the core, if you do not need the plugins, blogging, and all other other bloat that Wordpress has those 2 systems are lean mean systems for standard page management.

WolfCMS has a VERY simple UI, that is not cluttered and very easy for everyone to use

FuelCMS I like because it is written ontop of CodeIgniter which I use in my other Projects and makes it very easy for me to extend the system, it also has a File Based CMS mode that allows me to create and edit everything right from Netbeans so I get the power of a CMS, and the ability to use a Text Editor vs having to use Web Interface

I have actually moved many of my clients to concrete5 - concrete5 - Free CMS | Open Source Content Management System. As it says as a tag line, it is designed for Marketers, built for geeks. It is extremely easy for me to show clients how to manage their content since it is in page editing. It is extremely flexible, yet robust for large communities. A non-profit I am am doing work for just tested a load of 10,000 members (granted on a pretty nice server).

I agree 100% it depends on the client, their needs and the specific project requirements. But, we use Joomla the majority of the time - some WordPress builds as well when appropriate.

That's quite nice - very polished looking!

solid HTML.... it is still the best to start.
and a bit clarification on the question, wordpress, joomla are cms, while PHP is a language - WP and JOOMLA is made of PHP and HTML

in designing I use PHOTOSHOP or FIREWORKS then converted to HTML then.... apply it to wordpress or joomla.

A content management system (CMS) is what you'll likely want to go with. Most run on a database and PHP language. They are template based and you can add/swap themes for the whole site with a click.

There are many free ones out there. Drupal, Joomla, php fusion etc. They have an administrator login and allow you to update/create static pages and news articles. They also have extensions you can install to add a special functionality.

I've been using Joomla cms forever and know it well so I use it for most everything. Each one is a little different.

I have been working with Wordpress and I have to say I am pretty happy with it. The capabilities, widgets, plugins, etc are amazing!

Much easier/faster then trying to create a full blown site from HTML. (which is normally what I do).

Man i have not built a static html site since the 90's..... Good old server side includes and frames

Wordpress is nice, but they are starting to show signs of Feature Creep and Bloat, that is why I do not use Joomla, Drupal, *Nuke, because they try to be everything to everyone and end up being overly complex, hard to manage and even harder to customise. Wordpress has done a OK job at keeping it under control, but I am starting to see signs....
