"You may not make blatant advertising posts of any kind. This includes, but is not limited to, advertising or promoting other web hosting and registration companies and their programs."

I am not promoting web hosting or any other registration companies. I am selling domain names I own. As if I had a CD or a bike and I was asking for a price.

I think that whole rule above was introduced to prohibit idiots like 'Hosturbo' come here and start inviting others to their hosting plans.

The imperitive is "This includes, but is not limited to, advertising or promoting other web hosting. . ."

Also, take a look at this rule
    * 4 line signatures are allowed for displaying names, e-mails addresses and phone numbers. However, no blatant advertising or wrongful impersonation of a moderator or administrator is allowed.
    coughcoughTimechange's sigcoughcough.

I'm in no position to enforce that one (I can't modify your sig to say "Dogma is my God!" ), only Aletia is.

I'm not trying to hound you, I'm just charged with trying to enfoce the rules.

You don't really have an inherient right to advertise, John Locke didn't think about that.

    Too bad.

Oops, I just did it again

Seriously, I think that having a FOR SALE etc forum is imperative. My previous host had it on their vBulletin board and my next one will most definitely have one too

I hope it isn't going to come down to your leaving, timechange. Please, don't set up ultimatums because it really won't be a win for anyone in the end.

May I make a suggestion? My interpretation (as a non-moderator, I must emphasize, since I have no rights outside of a limited area) is that "blatant" would be construed as your listing the specfic domains and prices.

I would suggested that you simply state that you have three-letter domains for sale. Sure, emphasizing that they're rare would probably be a nice point. But I would angle the fact that you're offereing a complimentary service to Aletia's: for people setting up shop here, a new domain name might be very useful. And it doesn't seem to me that it would take away from Aletia's business.

But running a list here, with which ones are already sold, etc., is a bit much like setting up shop on the forums proper; ditto for your signature.

These domains that you offer are a useful service, but let eBay or whatever other venue take care of the actual business setting. I would think that limiting things to a "come and see for yourself" is your intended focal point anyway, since no one can actually buy here. I liked the way that you used to offer to PM people a whole list.

My two cents' worth in rambling format, trying to head off too much friction. There will always be a test case in law. While this isn't a legal issue, you can't win by pressing Aletia too far because they've already made an attempt at posting their rules. If they ignore them too much, they willl not be able to refer to them for truly problematic cases. Please don't push anyone into a corner on this one, when both you and the moderators can be happy.

First of all I was not aware of the particular rule, until Clio pointed it out. It's good to know what's allowed and what's not, but it's an oxymoron when the particular forum title says "Chit Chat: talk about ANYTHING".

Well my "something" happens to be selling domains that I own. If I had titled this thread "Bob's Garage Sale" and invited people to buy my used hardware it would have been no different than this. I challenge anyone with some background in law to point the difference to me, as I am literally selling "used" domain names

Also, as you might have noticed, I don't abuse the threading system and don't open multiple threads e.g. one per domain. I listed them all in one thread; the last time I did that was last month. And especially this time, I edited the message to show that one had been sold, I didn't even post a new message.

Of course right now this thread has been 'crap-flooded' in forums' lingo, or in other words the attention has been moved away from the original intended subject, to the loss of the initiator.

I honestly don't spam nor will I start a new thread just because all I got was mods' concerned diatrebes on the alleged violations that occur in my thread or sig.

I am just wondering whether it's worth the effort to be actively involved here if the environment continues to be inflexible and emergingly hostile.

regardless of how you try to not "flood" the forums with advertising threads, it is blatant advertising. and at the least, you've violated the 4 line signature rule.

we love you man, but you have to obey the rules, ok?

First of all, I dont intend for this to be a flame or anything of the sort.

I just want to pipe in and offer a possible solution, for everyone concerned. A couple of weeks ago, buried in a thread... I had requested/suggested the possibility of a new forum geared towards ecommerce. Whereby we the rightful users of this forum (aletiaforums.com), could pose questions releating specifically to ecommerce websites. And in this forum we would be allowed to advertise a service, in which we provide.

Surely it would need a bit of thought on exactly how to manage that particular forum (with guidelines), moreso for frequency of adverts (which Theo does keep to a minimun), I think one free plug per month is more than enough... (seems to be the pattern set by timers.. )
and I FULLY AGREE that advertising or discussing other webhost, anywhere on this board should not be tolerated.

To borrow clio's last comment to Timers, I love all you guys and gals... like an extended family of sorts and I wouldn't want to have to take sides. But I would still like to see the additional forum, if it doesn't happen... I will survive (like the rest of you ), but it would be a nice addition to this board.

Thanks for the consideration of this, and if any of the mods happen to agree in theory (at least)... We all would appreciate if you would go to Aletia, and ask for this feature to be added.

    ~Peace Out~
